Event Activities and How to Get Involved
Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire The Middle Kingdom A&S Competition is a two-part competition. In order to enter Kingdom A&S, one first needs to enter their project into the Regional A&S Faire and place with high enough scores to proceed to Kingdom. If you have never entered before, it is a great venue to get advice and comments on your work. To learn more about entering the Middle Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire, check out the following site for rules and divisional criteria: http://www.midrealm.org/moas/criteria.html Please note: there are no cooking facilities onsite for A&S entries, please bring them already fully prepared with a warming device if needed.
Arts & Sciences Classes Come teach a class, or take a class! The day of the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire is a day to celebrate our diverse knowledge of history, textiles, garments, songs, woodworking, and other interesting topics! Class Schedule
Please contact the Class Coordinator Ellisif Steinsdottir if you are interested in teaching a class.
Dancing and Bardic Let the fun not stop when Court ends: stick around for dancing and bardic circles. Please come enjoy the company of your fellow SCAdians when the days’ busy schedule is done. The Bardic Circle will be on Saturday night, after Court. Please come to share a song or story, or to just enjoy the festivities!
Rapier Activities Rapier activities will take place on Saturday during the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Faire. Rapier Classes
Rapier Arts and Sciences Display We would like to highlight the scholarly and artistic skills of the rapier community through a rapier-related A&S display by the list field. Some broad examples of items for display include distinctive armor, parry devices, weapons, and research into a period master. Please bring your project to share. No documentation required. Class Descriptions Body Mechanics from Primary Sources Martial arts is, in some fundamental way, about control. Control of a situation, control of an opponent, control of your own body and its movements. The European martial artists of the 15th and 16th century understood this, and they were lucky to have some of the greatest masters of illustration the world has ever known to document it. This class will interpret a variety of primary sources, with a goal of understanding how those authors understood body mechanics, and what it tells us about our own fighting. Intended to be of interest to rapier fighter, rattan fighters, and other students of movement systems. Application of Two-handed Swords in Non-cut and Thrust This class will not be a vocabulary or posing to wood cuts class. This will be a discussion based class about the practical use of a two handed sword in rapier combat without using percussive cuts and the advantages and disadvantages of the style. German Swordplay Basics Learn the basics of the German Swordplay tradition (Liechtenauer, Meyer, Sutor, etc.) and apply it where possible to SCA rattan and rapier combat. Emphasis will be primarily on longsword combat but the style is applicable to single sword. Please bring a sword simulator if you have one (Rattan sword, rapier, aluminum waster, broom stick, etc.). Tournament Description Authentic Accoutrements Tournament This tournament form is designed to reward entrants for presenting their most refined appearance and performance within the rules of SCA Rapier. A grand prize will be offered for authenticity of appearance and form, overall effort and success in the tournament and a secondary prize will be offered for success in the tournament, so this tournament is accessible to all. To receive points for appearance, the entrant must wear clothing and bare weapons available before 1600 AD in Europe. To receive points for period form, the entrant may name a period combat style to present. Judges will note how closely the entrant held to the system. If the entrant does not name a period style, the judges will score based on their understanding of generally efficient rapier use. The difficulty of an entrant’s goal in appearance and period form, even if not perfectly attained, counts towards overall effort. The tournament format will be based on the number of entrants, and wins will count towards both prizes.
