From The Senechal

If you are an officer with a standard message in the Runes, please check it every so often to make sure that dates etc are still correct!

Thanks to all of those who came and helped out at the Highland Games. I was actually stopped by several parents who thanked us for doing the games. One even specifically mentioned that their children are always thrilled to find out that they are coming because they know they get to do the highland kids games.
So thank you all again! The Geneseo committee is looking for individuals to volunteer to help run the festivel (work the gate, wipe off tables, take out the trash, etc.). This call to volunteer is strictly for the Fair and is not done in conjunction with anything that the Shire is doing to raise money. So basically... if you do volunteer to help and sign-up then you will get a free Geneseo Rennaisance FaireT-shirt, but please still volunteer to help the Shire. Otherwise the same few people will end-up doing all of the work to raise money for the group to spend. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me (ellonyia.yenney@mn-ia.aaa.com) or "Brother" Michael Skiles (jakada3@mchsi.com) Thanks Ellonyia

Letter From Brother Michael

Good morrow my lords and ladies, I, Brother Michael, am here to tell you of great news that has come out of Richmond Hollow, home of the Geneseo Shakespearean Festival and Renaissance Faire.
The GSF Renaissance Faire has been expanded to TWO DAYS.
Sept. 28th 10am - 5pm & Sept. 29th 10am - 4pm
There will be more time to shop among the vendors. More time to take in your favorite performances or to make sure you see them all. Another day to wear that wonderful Renaissance outfit you have. Another day to chose from for volunteering.
Ah, slipped the "V" word in there didn't I. Well with the faire going to two days we will need all the help we can get. In the past you filled out a demographic card saying you might be willing to help out with the faire. And here I am asking, and if need be begging, for your help this year. You will actually have 4 days to choose from for volunteering. For your contribution you'll receive a t-shirt and free entry to the faire. Our goal is to make this our best year ever. But we will not be able to reach that goal without the help of our volunteers. Please take a look at the following list of duties and see if there is one in which you could help us out with. Each shift will consist of 2-4 hrs depending on how many volunteers we have working.
Set-up Friday
Tear Down Sunday night and/or Monday
Ticket Booth/Gates Saturday or Sunday
Parking Saturday or Sunday
Table (wash tables in eating area) Saturday or Sunday
Empty trash cans Saturday or Sunday
Check Port-a-potties (refill TP) Saturday or Sunday
Runners Saturday or Sunday

May I hear from thee soon,
Brother Michael

From the Blacksmith's Guilde
There is no report for this month. The meeting for September will be announced at a later time, depending on the progress of the construction of my new shop. Yours in service, Gunther Todmacher

From the Chronicler
TThe Shire of Dark River also has a Yahoo Groups list on the Internet at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/shireofdarkriver. Anyone interested can sign up and get announcements and reminders. We will be utilizing this list more in the future rather than the mailing list, which is unwieldy to maintain. You can be in charge of keeping your own account information correct so you will always be assured of receiving any important shire related information.
If anyone has anything they would like included or corrected in the future copies of this newsletter please let me know. Any suggestions are welcome. If any officers would like a "standing" message (such as this one) to run please send it to me via email and I will include it in future copies

From the Fighter Marshal
Fighter practice has been moved from Tuesday nights to Wednesday nights at 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
The location is still the same:
Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church
1201 13th Street Moline, IL 61265.
For more information see Daffyd or Gunther.

From the Herald
Those in need of Names or Devices please see me. Get the forms and instruction sheets before working on your Name or Device, then follow the forms and instructions in drafting something. Get this draft to me for a two or three-week review and I'll get back to you with suggestions for a final submission to me, which I will complete and copy for sending up the line. Stay somewhat flexible on your Name and Device until you finalize it for submission. This will give you the best chance for approval on the first try.
Also, please drop me a note regarding the particulars whenever you receive an Award. I need to maintain records on all awards. Information should include the following: Type of Award, Recipients Name (as listed on scroll), Reason for Award (as listed on scroll) and Date of Presentation (as listed on scroll).
Celtic Highland Games, 24 August 2002
This year's games are now history and were a success. The unofficial count put attendance at 6,000, approximately double the last two years. Once the sun came out in late morning, people arrived in droves - no rain this year versus a light shower each of the past two. The Shire had one last minute cancellation, two no shows, some arrived late, and some wanted to tear down early, but - hey - we'll do better next year. 24 members worked the games (all using Gate Passes - hurray!) versus 18 last year, and my thanks go to all of these. Although this is short of the first year's (1999) 35, it's hard to recapture initial enthusiasm. The armored combat (two sessions), parade, and kids games (three sessions) all went well, and I already have ideas on how to better use our manpower next year. The first meeting for 2003 is September 5th.
The Shire received its $250 check on games' day for our participation. As Lady Norelle stated last Runes, "we do demos during the year to save up to throw a great party for all the other SCA people." (We also do them because they're fun.) If for whatever reason you missed the games last month, we still have our biggest fund raiser (Geneseo) coming up this month, and we need lots of people for both Saturday (28) and Sunday (29), plus set up on Friday. Lord Edar

Arts & Sciences
To all the gentles in Shire of Dark River - please consider entering your Arts & Sciences accomplishments for judging at any upcoming A&S faires. You would be competing against set criteria as opposed to against other individuals. I know there are those of you that are stitching, brewing, cooking, armoring, etc. There are all manners of categories to choose from. We have very talented artisans in our shire and I would like to see you be recognized for your various talents. Imagine returning home with a first place award! What a confidence builder.
Many members of our shire are frequently working on Arts and Sciences projects at home, that I am unaware of. It is my duty to send a quarterly report to the Regional MOAS about what our shire and all of it's members have been doing. In order for this report to accurately reflect all your talents you have to share information with me about what you are doing. I routinely pass a notebook around at monthly business meetings for people to record their current projects, but members can not always attend. You can email me (wmal@mchsi.com) or phone me (787-6653), or even send by your personal messenger (preferably on horseback in period garb - my neighbors would be so impressed) details of your accomplishments. Lets show the rest of the kingdom our A&S talents!
