October 12, 2012

Greetings unto all who read these words from Meister Konrad Mailander, Rouge Scarpe Herald,

This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptances and Returns for the items on the August 29th, 2012 ILoI.  This is the first batch of Pennsic submissions.

My thanks to Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Gunnvor silfraharr, Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada, Ginevra Boscoli, Alys Mackyntoich, Andreas von Meißen, Lillia de Vaux, Chaya Simcha bat Yonah, Kihō, Tanczos Istvan, Juetta Copin, Eirik Halfdanarson, Brenna Lowri o Ruthin, Taran Saraev, and Magnus von Lübeck for their commentary.

Since the letters are now being posted on OSCAR with documentation and commentary open for all to see I will no longer be copying commentary to this letter.  If you would like to see the commentary for this letter please go to http://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=1529

SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory.  These are the new rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red.  Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.

1: Alan Albertson - New Name & New Device

Azure, a sword inverted argent surmounted by a bar enarched Or charged with the words "Per Fidem Honor" sable and a bordure compony sable and argent. "Per Fidem Honor" translates to "Through Faith Honor".

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Azure, a sword inverted argent surmounted by a bar enarched Or charged with the words "Per Fidem Honor" sable and a bordure compony sable and argent.

2: Alban Dameron Elexander - New Device

Argent, in pale a fleur-de-lys azure and in saltire two peacock feathers proper, orbed argent eyes to chief, and a bordure azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, in pale a fleur-de-lys azure and in saltire two peacock feathers proper, a bordure azure.  The submitter should be aware that this may not be registerable due to the unity of posture clause in SENA:

SENA A.3.D.2. c. Unity of Posture and Orientation: The charges within a charge group should be in either identical postures/orientations or an arrangement that includes posture/orientation (in cross, combatant, or in pall points outward, for example). A charge group in which postures for different charges must be blazoned individually will not be allowed without period examples of that combination of postures. Arrangements of charges which cannot be blazoned will not be allowed. Some standard arrangements for period charge groups are discussed in Appendix K.

For example, a design such as Argent, two lions passant respectant and a lion statant erect affronty vert would not be allowed. Likewise, a design such as Azure, two pheons bendwise, and a pheon inverted Or would not be allowed. However, crescents, increscents, decrescents, and crescents pendant were used occasionally in the same armory, so armory which includes more than one of these is allowed.

As this is a new rule and all the examples given have the same type of charge it is being sent up to make sure whether or not this rule applies in a case such as this one.

3: Alen Elegil - Resub Household Name

Hollincross

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Hollincross House>.  This was missing a designator.  One was added after consulting with the submitter.

4: Alise MacLeod - New Name & New Device

Per bend sinister argent and azure, a lightning bolt and a sprig of heather both bendwise counterchanged.

ROUGE SCARPE:   Name forwarded to Laurel as <Ailsa MacLeod>.  The name as submitted conflicts with both <Alison MacLeod> (reg. 10/1997 via Atlantia) and <Alisha MacLeod> (reg. 09/1986 via the East).  There was a note that, “Client desires the Spelling <Ailsa>, but we were unable to find it.”  Eastern Crown Herald was able document <Ailsa> from extracted IGI records.  This has the benefit of clearing the conflicts and giving the submitter what they originally wanted.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per bend sinister argent and azure, a lightning bolt and a sprig of heather both bendwise counterchanged.  The use of a lightning bolt independent of a thunderbolt is an SFPP.  The submitter should be aware that commenters had some difficultly recognizing the sprig of heather as drawn.  This was not clear enough of a problem to cause a return at Kingdom but may cause it to be returned at Laurel level.

5: Allegra Ginevra Soave da Napoli - New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel.

6: Alliette Menestrel - New Name & New Device

Argent, on a chevron azure five musical notes and in base a viol counter-changed.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  The submitter should be aware that the byname may need to be changed to a feminine form, either <menestrele> or <menestrelle>.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, on a chevron azure five musical notes argent and in base a viol azure.

7: Angharad ferch Tangwystl - New Device Change

Or, a rose within a bordure sable mullety Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Or, a rose within a bordure sable mullety Or.  Her current device and her badge [Fieldless] a butterfly sable mulletty Or., are to be released.

8: Anna Marie Pierrepont - New Name & New Device

Azure, on a bend between two beehives Or, three bear's heads palewise azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Azure, on a bend between two beehives Or, three bear's heads couped azure.

9: Anne de Lille - New Name & New Device

Per chevron inverted Or and vert, an acorn proper and two nine-man-morris boards Or

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per chevron inverted Or and vert, an acorn proper and two nine-man-morris boards Or marked sable.

10: Arigh Ulagan-Checheg - New Name & New Device

Or, three sexfoils two and one gules between flaunches sable.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Or, three sexfoils two and one gules between flaunches sable.

11: Arthur Nathaniel Archer - New Device

Gules, a chief raguly bendy Or and vert.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for conflict with John Thorn (reg. 02/2000 via Ansteorra), "Gules, a chief embattled argent." There is one DC for the tincture of the chief.  This was not a New Device but a resubmission.  In looking at the cause for return of his original design it was discovered that it is now clear under SENA.

12: Arthur Nathaniel Archer - New Badge

(Fieldless) A fox passant bendy Or and vert.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  (Fieldless) A fox passant bendy Or and vert.

13: Aturdokht of Dark River - New Name & New Device

Argent, a wyvern erect within the tail in annulo vert a paw print sable and a base rayonny gules.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, a wyvern erect within the tail in annulo vert a paw print sable and a base rayonny gules.  The use of a paw print is a SFPP.

14: Bjorn Ultharsson - New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for lack of documentation.  The byname was submitted under the Grandfather Clause.  The submitter’s father’s registered SCA name is Ulthar Sveinsson.  Unfortunately for the submitter the Grandfather Clause only applies to the exact form of the registered name.  Ulthar would be covered under the Grandfather Clause but Ultharsson is not.  Ulthar/Ultharr would need to be documented to register the byname <Ultharsson>.  The closest that was found was the Old Norse name <Úlfarr>, which Geirr Bassi has on p. 15 and Lind notes as the name of a couple of the Icelandic Settlers. The patronymic would then be <Úlfarsson>.  This would be a major change which the submitter does not allow.

SENA PN1.B.2.g. The Grandfather Clause: In a new personal name submission, an individual may use name phrases already registered to them, even if that name phrase would no longer be allowed under the current rules. Only the exact, actual name phrase from the registered form may be used, not variants, patterns, etc. The use of the grandfather clause does not allow the submitter to evade new style problems (as discussed in PN.2 below). It only allows the submitter to keep style problems that already exist with the registered name.

Precedent:  Listed on the LoI as Patrick Olesson, this name was submitted as Patrick Oleson. Lacking documentation for the spelling Oleson, the byname was changed at Kingdom to use the spelling Olesson based on the construction of the byname registered to "his mundane sister, Caryl Olesdatter (registered 07/92)." However, no documentation was provided for the relationship between the submitter and Caryl Olesdatter except for the statement in the LoI. Lacking supporting documentation for this relationship, this name is not eligible for the Grandfather Clause. Even had such documentation been provided, the Grandfather Clause would not have been applicable in this case since "[o]nly the actual name element from the originally registered submission is covered by this permission" (RfS II.5). That would mean that Olesdatter is covered by the Grandfather Clause. The submitted Olesson is not. [LoAR 10/2002]

15: Brighid of Red Spears - New Name & New Device

Azure, a ram-horned goat rampant and on a chief argent three quail contourny azure.

22: Elisabeth Beauvisage - New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in October of 2011, via the Middle

Per chevron inverted azure and argent, a compass star Or and two cats couchant respectant sable.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per chevron inverted azure and argent, a compass star Or and two cats couchant respectant sable.

23: Elizabeth Paix est Bonne - New Name & New Device

Sable, a lizard tergiant embowed and counter-embowed argent, and in chief three flies fesswise volant to chief per fess argent and Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Sable, a lizard tergiant embowed and counter-embowed argent and in chief three flies fesswise to chief per fess argent and Or.  The submitter should be aware that commentary suggested that flies should be draw with their wings swept back and these as depicted may be more properly blazoned as bees.  I am leaving them blazoned as flies so that the submitter’s intent was clear but they may get reblazoned by Wreath as bees at the Laurel level.

24: Jean Paul Pierrepont - New Badge

(Fieldless) A tower bridge of three arches purpure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  (Fieldless) A tower bridge of three spans purpure.

25: Morgause du Forêt - New Alternate Name

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in March of 1984, via Atlantia

Jayalakshmii Braroo Patel

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel.

26: Morita Ichirou Masatada - New Name & New Device

Azure, a Japanese sho symbol within in fess two deer's antlers argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel.  Device returned for redraw and additional documentation.  The deer’s antlers are not recognizable as such.  The submitter should be aware that one of the commeters offered a redraw that the submitter may want to use; it is available on the ILoI linked above.  It would more properly be blazoned along the lines of:  Azure, the kanji "shou" (righteous) between two deer's antlers argent.  Including a definition distinguishes it from the variety of other Japanese characters pronounced "shou", according to comments.  It appears that this would be the first registration of this symbol, and therefore that the symbol must be documented.

27: Mustafa al-Hasan ibn Abdul Azziz - New Name & New Device

Sable, a moose rampant contourny within an orle of vine Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel as <Mustafa al-Hasan ibn `Abd al-Aziz>. Change made was specifically allowed by the submitter and matches the attested form of that element.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Sable, a moose rampant contourny within an orle of vine Or.

28: Nadyezhda the Simple - New Name & New Device

Azure, three escallops and on a chief argent a shepherd's crook fesswise azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Azure, three escallops and on a chief argent a shepherd's crook fesswise azure.

29: Oengus mac Airledo - New Name & New Device

Gules, four plates in pall and a bordure embattled argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Gules, four plates in pall and a bordure embattled argent.

30: Paul Kupser the Brewer - New Name & New Device

Per fess azure and sable, three fleurs-de-lys within a bordure argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per fess azure and sable, three fleurs-de-lys within a bordure argent.

31: Rannvæig ørraärmr Eskilskona - New Name & New Device

Gules two ravens addoesed conjoined and in chief an eye argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel as <Rannvæig ørrarmr Eskilskona>.  Name changed as suggested in commentary.  The form <Rannveig Áskælskona> was also suggested as a possible spelling of the name.  The forward form was chosen since it was slightly closer to what was submitted.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Gules, two ravens addoesed conjoined and in chief an eye argent.

32: Sarre Anne Pierrepont - Resub Device

Purpure, a pile inverted ployé throughout Or a semy of butterflies sable between two roses Or each charged with a fleur-de-lys purpure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per chevron ployé throughout purpure and Or semy of butterflies sable, two roses Or each charged with a fleur-de-lys purpure.

33: Shria Mahyyn - Resub Name & Resub Device

Argent, a crequier sable and on a chief vert a moon in plentitude argent between two cats heads erased Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel as <Shria Manuul>.  The English-Mongolian dictionary used give the Mongolian in Cyrillic, so the spelling was <Мануул> not <Mahyyn>.  This transliterates into Latin characters as <Manuul>.  The submitter should also be aware that comments suspect <Shria> in the source used is a typo.  An Introduction to Classical Mongolian has yellow as Shira or Šira depending on how you transliterate the Mongol script. There is a name Khargil Shira in Names from the Secret History of the Mongols by Heather Daveno, http://www.augustphoenix.com/studypages/mongol_names.htm.  <Manuul> may still have the problem of not being documented as period but the name is being forwarded to give it the benefit of further commentary now that the byname has been transliterated.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, a crequier sable and on a chief vert a moon in plentitude argent between two cats heads erased Or.

34: Skallagrim Neinnskegg Rickarôsson - New Name & New Device

Per saltire argent and gules, two spears in saltire sable throughout and a bordure Or

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded as <Skallagrímr skegglauss Ríkarðarson>.  The spellings of the given name and byname have been corrected to the attested spellings.  The <ô> in the submitted <Rickarôsson> appears to be a misread of the <ð> in the source.  Commentary provided documentation for the descriptive nickname <skegglauss> with the desired meaning.  The submitter specifically allowed changing this element as long as the meaning was preserved.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per saltire argent and gules, two spears in saltire sable throughout and a bordure Or.  The submitter should be aware that the low contrast of the spears verses the gules portions of the field may cause this to be returned for identifiability.

35: Takeda Yoichitarou Yoshihiro - New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel

36: Tarmach ben Yehuda al-Khazar - Resub Name Change

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel.

37: Thorwyn MacLeod - New Name & New Device

Per fess azure and sable, a lightning bolt fesswise and a celtic cross argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per fess azure and sable, a lightning bolt fesswise and a celtic cross argent.

38: Tuathlaith Davyoth - New Name & New Device

Argent, on a triangle throughout between three horse shoes inverted purpure a hummingbird volant to sinister argent sustaining a lance fesswise reversed Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Tuathlaith Dabach>.  As submitted the byname is not registerable due to temporal disparity.  The given name is dated to 754 at the latest and the submitted form of the byname is dated to 1300 which is over a 500 year difference.  The byname has been changed to the Old Gaelic word that the submitted byname and a few other placenames derived from to bring it within 500 years.  The submitter should know that we are not sure of this construction and it may not be registerable or need to be changed again at the Laurel level.

SENA PN2.C.2. Culturally Mixed Names: Names that mix name phrases from different times and/or places are allowed if the name meets one of the following conditions.
a. The name mixes name phrases found in a single regional naming group as listed in Appendix C that are dated to within 500 years of one another.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, on a triangle throughout between three horse shoes inverted purpure a hummingbird volant to sinister argent sustaining a lance fesswise reversed Or.

39: Tzvi ben Avraham - Resub Device

Argent, a stag's head erased gules within a Star of David, all within an annulet azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Argent, a stag's head erased gules within a Star of David, all within an annulet azure.  This device is identical to the previous submission that was returned in 1997.  Since it is identical there should not be high hopes that it will be registerable now but it is being forwarded since there has been an increase in availability of heraldic sources in the last 15 years and the rules set it will be evaluated under has recently changed.

40: Umm Iskander Mihri - New Name & New Device

Or, on a bend between two lotus blossoms in profile azure a scimitar bendwise argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:   Name Forwarded to Laurel as <Umm Iskandar Mihri>.  As submitted the name phrase <Umm Iskander> mixes the Arabic <Umm> (mother of) and the Turkish <Iskander>.  Name elements may not mix languages unless there is documentation of their being mixed in period.  The consulting herald was an idiot for not catching that…and I will try to do better in the future.  (Just in case someone reading this did not get that:  I was the consulting herald.)  Luckily the change making this name phrase wholly Arabic was a small one, requiring only the change of one vowel.  The given name <Mihri> has yet to be attested to as a period spelling but there was a Turkish poet named Mihri that died in 1506 but we do not know if that name is normalized.

SENA PN1.B.1. Single Time and Place: A registerable name phrase must follow the rules of grammar and structure for a single time and place. It may not mix languages unless that mixing of languages within a name phrase is attested as a period practice.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Or, on a bend between two lotus blossoms in profile azure a scimitar.
