October 27, 2012
Greetings unto all who read these words from Meister Konrad Mailander, Rouge Scarpe Herald,
This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptances and Returns for the items on the September 16th, 2012 ILoI. This is the second and final batch of Pennsic submissions.
My thanks to Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Brían dorcha ua Conaill, Solveig Throndardottir, Eldrich Gaiman, Ásfríðr Úlfvíðardóttir, Hiordis Ragnarsdottir, Gunnvor silfraharr, Ginevra Boscoli, Kolosvari Arpadne Julia, Gawain of Miskbridge, Alys Mackyntoich, and Magnus von Lübeck for their commentary.
Since the letters are now being posted on OSCAR with documentation and commentary open for all to see I will no longer be copying commentary to this letter. If you would like to see the commentary for this letter please go to http://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=1549
SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory. These are the new rules for submissions.
My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red. Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.
1: Eskil Haraldsson - New Name
ROUGE SCARPE: Returned for conflict with <Egil Haraldsson> (reg. 05/2002
via Meridies).
The only difference is between <-skil>
and <-gil>, PN.3.C.2 doesn't apply since only
consonants have changed, the vowels haven't.
For resubmitting the easiestchanges would be
to add a descriptive byname. Here is a
source for Norse descriptive bynames if he would like to do that: http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html. The other easy fix would be to change the
patronymic, depending on how important to be Harald's
son is to him.
PN.3.C.2. Substantial Change to One Syllable:
Names are substantially different if a single syllable between them (excluding
articles and prepositions, such as de and the) is changed in both
sound and appearance as described here. The addition or removal of a syllable
makes two names substantially different in sound. Two names are also
substantially different if a syllable is substantially changed in sound and
appearance. This means that the vowel and the consonant (or group of
consonants) on one side of the vowel is different between the two names. In
either case, the change in spelling (including addition or removal of letters)
must affect at least two letters in that syllable to be substantial.
2: Faílenn
ingen Áedáin - New Name & New Device
Sable,
a butterfly Or and on a chief indented argent a
butterfly sable between two more purpure.
ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to
Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with
the Blazon: Sable, a butterfly Or and on a chief indented argent a butterfly sable between
two more purpure.
SENA A.3.D.1. (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/sena.html#A3D1)
explicitly allows the combo of the primary and tertiary butterflies:
"Charge types with identical blazons are allowed to be both on the field
and in a tertiary charge group or in two separate tertiary charge groups."
3:
Fujiwara no Ka'neko - New Name
ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel.
4: Gareth Thorne - New Badge
OSCAR finds the name
registered exactly as it appears in January of 1997, via the Middle
Vert, four arrows conjoined as a mascle Or.
ROUGE SCARPE:
Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:
Vert, a mascle of
four arrows conjoined point to nock Or. The arrows are rather thin and this may cause
difficulty with registration due to identifiably. If it does get returned one of the commenters
did a redrawing with thicker arrows that can be used to resubmit, see the
comments on the submission.
5: Geneviève O'Connor - New Name
ROUGE SCARPE: Forwarded to Laurel as <
Genevieve O'Connor>. Accent on the e dropped according to
precedent on the source documenting the name.
Precedent:
Submitted as Geneviève la Douce, the given
name was documented ... as a spelling found in Colm Dubh, "An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census
of Paris" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.html).
Accents found in this work reflect modern editorial additions in the 1837
compilation from which these names were taken; they do not appear in the original
census document. Given this, we have changed the name to Genevieve la Douce. [LoAR 10/2007, Caid-A]
6: Gudrun Ivarsdottir - New Name
ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. The submitter should be aware that the name would properly be <Guðrún Ívarsdóttir>, dropping the accents and special characters would give the spelling submitted. Commentary was unclear if the submitted spelling was acceptable or not so we have left it as submitted.
7: Gunnvarðr læknir - New Name
ROUGE SCARPE: Forwarded to Laurel
8: Gunther von Brandenburg - New Badge
OSCAR finds the name
registered exactly as it appears in November of 1988, via the Middle

11: Immanuel Von Brandenberg - New Name & New Device
Per chevron inverted argent
and azure, a sun gules and two herons close addorsed Or.
ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel as
<Immanuel von Brandenburg>. <Brandenberg> was a typo from the source cited which was
actually <Brandenburg>, although <Brandenberg>
is a period variant spelling. The
submitter was contacted and <von Brandenburg> was the intended spelling.
Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon: Per chevron inverted argent and azure, a sun gules and two herons close addorsed Or.
12: Jālida

ROUGE SCARPE:
17: Kathryne
Sommerfeldt - New Name & New Device
Azure, a winged lozenge and a bordure argent.
ROUGE SCARPE: Name Forwarded to Laurel as
<Kathryne Sommerfeld>. Commentary did not see the examples given as
sufficient to justify the submitted spelling of the given name. The desired spelling was found as an English
name in IGI Extracted Parish records but English and German are not a usable
combination according to SENA Appendix C: Regional Naming Groups and Their
Mixes. Commentary also provided
documentation for <Sommerfeld> also as an
English name. Since the submitter
indicated that the spelling of the given name was the most important and
allowed major changes (such as a change of language) the byname was changed to
make the name wholly English.
Device forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon: Azure, a winged lozenge and a bordure argent.
18: Kawamura no Ryôtarô Yoshichi - New Name & New Device
Argent, between four cranes
migrant, heads to center a roundel sable conjoined.
ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to
Laurel. The submitter should be aware
that it is likely that changes will need to be made to the name. The Online Japanese Miscellany is not
acceptable as sole source of documentation.
Commentary also suggested that the <no>
should be dropped. As Japanese names are
not my specialty and no clear recommendations were made in commentary I am sending
it on as submitted for more commentary at the Laurel level.
Device forwarded with the Blazon: Argent, a pellet between four cranes migrant heads to center, all conjoined sable.

Arpadne Julia’s detailed commentary the submitter was
given a number of options. He decided he
preferred <Kigyosi Istvan>
which was given as a plausible end of period variant.
