My thanks to Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Alys Mackyntoich, Brunissende Dragonette, Brenna Lowri o Ruthin, Modar Neznanich, Etienne Le Mons, Kolfinna Hrafnkelsdottir, Tanczos Istvan, Andreas von Meißen, ffride wlffsdotter, Piotr Zavilov, Ginevra Boscoli, Oddr mjǫksiglandi, Gunnvor silfraharr, and Estelle de la Mer for their commentary.

Since the letters are now being posted on OSCAR with documentation and commentary open for all to see I will no longer be copying the documentation or commentary to this letter.  If you would like to see the documentation or commentary for this letter please go to http://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=2094

SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory.  These are the new rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red.  Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.

1: Cellach macCormaic - New Device Change

Quarterly argent and lozengy argent and azure, two stags springing azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for appearance of marshaling.  Because it would be possible, barring conflict, to register, “Lozangy argent and azure,” this device has the appearance of marshaling the arms “Argent, a stag springing azure,” with the arms “Lozengy argent and azure” thus violating SENA A.6.F Claims through Marshalling (http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A6F).

Additionally it is being returned for violating SENA A.3.B.3.c: “Elements Divided Quarterly or Per Saltire: Elements divided quarterly or per saltire may use any two tinctures or furs, as long as they do not share a base tincture.” (http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3B3a). The “lozengy argent and azure” quarters of the shield shares a base tincture with the “argent” quarters.  The argent in one of one set of quarters would need to be changed to Or to be registerable.

2: Christian the Wanderer - New Name Change

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Christian Diether Wanderer>.  <the Wanderer> was documented from the list of SCA compatible names.  Unfortunately there are no longer such things as SCA compatible names.

From Pelican: No More SCA-Compatibility

On the May 2008 Cover Letter, we ruled:

Therefore, as of the May 2009 decisions meetings, we declare that no new name elements or name patterns will be ruled SCA-compatible, that all names previously ruled SCA-compatible are no longer SCA-compatible and that in order for them to be registered, documentation meeting the same standards as for non-SCA-compatible names will be required.

Commenters were able to document both <Christian> and <Wanderer> to late period Germany, Making <Christian Wanderer> possible as a wholly German name.  The submitter had marked no major changes which would have precluded the dropping of <the> from the name as dropping a element is considered a major change.  During further consulting with the submitter they allowed the dropping of “the” and the addition of <Diether> as a second given name.

8: Luciano dei Castellani da Firenze - New Device

Ermine, three chevronels gules between three horses ranpany sable.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Ermine, three chevronels gules between three horses rampant sable.  As <Luciano Castellani da Firenze> is the submitter’s alternate name this is being forwarded under the submitter’s primary name <Ari keilismuli>.  If the submitter would like the alternate name changed to their primary all they need to do is send Escutcheon a letter stating as much.  Swapping a primary name with an already registered alternate name is a administrative change which is not charged for.

9: Osgar Chubb - New Name & New Device

Per pale azure and gules, a wolf couchant argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel.   Device returned for conflict with Finn Silverfox (reg. 02/1987 via the Middle), "Vert, chausse chequy argent and sable, a fox dormant argent." There is a DC for the field, but none for fox vs. wolf or dormant vs. couchant.

10: Rois Alann inghean Ui Fhlaithbheartaigh - New Device Change

Per bend sinister purpure and argent, in bend two hourglasses counterchanged.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon:  Per bend sinister purpure and argent, two hourglasses counterchanged.

11: Ysabeau de Lisieux - Resub Device

Purpure, a bear sejant erect argent holding a laurel branch Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for conflict with Lachlan Bradoc (reg. 08/1986 via the West), "Per pale gules and vert, a bear rampant guardant argent." There is one DC for the field.  Unfortunately there is no difference granted for the maintained laurel branch or sejant erect vs. rampant.  The submitter did fix the style problems of the original submission which makes us regret having to return their submission again for conflict.
