7: Cellach macCormaic - Resub Device

Per pale argent and lozengy azure and argent a stag springing and a chief azure.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for appearance of marshaled armory. SENA A.6.F.3.c says "The addition of a bordure or chief that does not itself appear to be part of two distinct original arms also removes that appearance. In general, a chief or bordure which has poor contrast with one side of the field or one that is charged so that identical charges or parts of charges appear on both sides of the line of division or bordure meets this standard." http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A6F3c Unfortunately with the uncharged chief this could be seen as marshalling of "Argent, a stag springing and a chief azure" with "Lozengy argent and azure, a chief azure". The simplest fix would be to charge the chief so that identical charges or parts of charges appear on both sides of the line of division.

8: Fionnghuala Mag Aodha - New Name & New Device

Bendy vert and sable, a serpent entwining an anchor and in chief a fox passant argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name Forwarded to Laurel as <Fionnghuala inghean Aodha>. The name was not properly constructed for a female name in 12th-14th cen. Gaelic. <Mag> is a variant of “son of”, for a woman the proper construction is <inghean Aodha> “daughter of Aodh” see: "Quick and Easy Gaelic Names" (3rd ed.) by Sharon Krossa (http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#simplepatronymicbyname). As the submitter allows changes we have made the correction to the construction and forwarded it to Laurel.

Device Returned. This device has several problems. Per SENA A.3.B.3.d. a bendy field requires good contrast between the tinctures used, sable and vert are both colors and do not have good contrast. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3B3d This device also violates SENA A.3.D.2.a Slot Machine heraldry having three different types of charges in the same charge group; fox, snake, and anchor. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3D2a Finally there are identifiability problems with the combination of the snake and anchor as drawn. The snake obscures some of the identifying features of the anchor and since the head of the snake is over its own coils it is not immediately identifiable as a snake. The submitter should be aware that Orle Herald provided in the commentary a combination of a snake and anchor that eliminates the identifiablity problem if they wish to use this motif in their resubmission. https://oscar.sca.org/cImages/520/2014-05-08/17-50-36_Snake_and_Anchor.jpg

15: Rivenvale, Shire of - New Device Change

Vert, on a pile azure fimbriated, a laurel wreath Or and in chief three mullets of eight points argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the Blazon: Vert, on a pile azure fimbriated, a laurel wreath Or and in chief three mullets of eight points argent. This design has two tertiary groups on the same charge, which is normally not allowed. However a precedent was brought up that may allow this to be registered since the laurel wreath is a required charge.

November 2013, LOAR cover letter states:

"A submission this month included the motif of an X within a laurel wreath. We regard this as being two separate charge groups, typically a primary charge surrounded by a secondary laurel wreath. By long-standing precedent, two separate charge groups may not be placed as tertiary charges on the same underlying charge. This is repeated in SENA Appendix I, which states that "A single charge group may only have one tertiary charge group on it." Without documentation of this sort of pattern in period, placing this motif on an underlying charge is not ordinarily registerable.

We do, however, recognize the inherent difficulty in design as a laurel wreath is required in all branch arms. A crown or coronet is additionally required for kingdoms, and optionally for principalities. We have long relaxed some of the style rules for augmentations. SENA A3A3 explains, "Because an augmentation adds complexity, augmented devices are often allowed to violate certain style rules, such as allowing charges on tertiary charges or a complexity count of greater than eight, as long as the identifiability of the design is maintained. However, they may not violate the rules on contrast." Because required elements add complexity to an armorial design, we are similarly willing on a case by case basis to allow branch armory with required elements to violate certain style rules, as long as identifiability of the design is maintained."

The same argument for the addition of the crown in this case could be argued for the laurel wreath. Therefore it is being sent forwarded for a decision by Wreath Herald. The previous device of the group cannot be registered as a badge but can be retained as ancient arms for the group.
