SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory, the current rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red. Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.

1: Arnbjorn Frakkason - New Name & New Device

Per fess gules and Or, two eagles displayed and a bear rampant counter-changed.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel as <Arnbiǫrn Frakkason>. The change was made after discussion with the submitter as to whether they wanted the accent on the "o" or not. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per fess gules and Or, two eagles and a bear rampant counterchanged.

2: Briarwood, Canton of - New Branch Name & New Badge

Per chevron vert and azure, within a laurel wreath a fluer de lis and in chief five fluer de lis Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Branch name forwarded to Laurel. Device returned for violating SENA A. 3. D. 1. "Having identical types of charges in multiple charge groups on the field blurs the distinction between charge groups. Thus, it is not allowed, except for cotises and endorses around an ordinary. Charge types with identical blazons are allowed to be both on the field and in a tertiary charge group or in two separate tertiary charge groups". http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3D1 The primary and secondary fleurs-de-lys are exactly what this section of SENA addresses. Note this was a Device submission and not a Badge submission as listed on the ILoI.

3: Dag Thorgrimsson - New Augmentation of Arms

Tierced per pall argent, azure and sable, two dexter gauntlets clasped in chevron inverted argent and in chief a wolf's head caboshed sable and for augmentation on an escutcheon argent, a pale gules surmounted by a dragon passant vert.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Tierced per pall argent, azure and sable, two dexter gauntlets clasped in chevron inverted argent and in chief a wolf's head caboshed sable and for augmentation on an escutcheon argent, a pale gules surmounted by a dragon passant vert.

4: Kjalvor Sæbjarnardottir
- New Name Change & New Device

Azure, on a fess wavy cotised argent three gouttes des larmes.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Azure, on a fess wavy cotised argent three gouttes des larmes. Note this is a New Device Change and not a New Device submission. There old device, Argent goutty purpure, a leaf vert, is to be released if this is registered.

5: Konrad Mailander
- New Heraldic Title

Gold Mace Herald

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for conflict with the Middle Kingdom's Order of the Gold Mace. A letter of Permission to Conflict was obtained from their Majesties and the Kingdom Seneschal unfortunately Permission to Conflict cannot be granted between a Heraldic title and award name per NPN. 3. E. "Any change to the sound and appearance of the designator is sufficient to allow the registration of a non-personal name with a letter of permission to conflict, except when both items are branches, orders or awards, or heraldic titles or when one item is an order or award and the other is a heraldic title." http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#NPN3E

6: Leofrune Godwinesdohtor
- New Name & New Device

Per bend gules and vert a boar rampant Or and four Thor's hammers conjoined at the haft argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per bend gules and vert, a boar rampant Or and four Thor's hammers conjoined at the haft argent.

7: Ligessac Cook
- New Name Change From Holding Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Lyggessauc Cook>. <Lyggessauc> is the documented spelling of the name and according to the consulting herald that is what he had meant to put on the form in the first place. That Cook is the submitters legal surname has been attested to by the Opinicus Pursuivant and Dragon Signet.

8: Maggie MacKeith
- New Name Change

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel.

9: Mor ingen Lorcán
- New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Mór ingen Lorccáin>. The doumentation provided were not good sources for Gaelic names. Better documentation was provided by commenters. <Lorccáin> is the genitive form of the Middle Irish male name <Lorccán>. Patronymic bynames need to use the genitive form of the father's name. Because accents must be used consistently throughout Gaelic names and the documentation found has an accent on <Mór>, the name must be either <Mór ingen Lorccáin> OR <Mor ingen Lorccain>.

10: North Woods, Barony of the - New Badge

Azure a sun Or within three wolves in annulo courant argent.

ROUGE SCARPE: Forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Azure, a sun Or within three wolves in annulo courant argent. The badge has been redrawn. The submitted emblazon had a black thin line annulet that was an artifact of being designed on a round shape and was transferred to the form with the emblazon. This would have been reason for return for redraw. The sun has been enlarged to be the primary charge as well after consulting with the Baron and Baroness of the Barony. The new emblazon was approved by the Baron and Baroness of the North Woods. There is a step from period practice for the arrangement in annulo. With enlarging the sun that should be the only one. From the December 2012 LoAR Cover Letter:  "A submission this month raised the issue of whether or not multiple charges in annulo, where the charges are arranged and turned in a circle so that each charge has a different orientation, is found in period armory. Evidence provided suggests that in fact it is not a period motif at all. Multiple charges arranged in annulo or in orle are typically only found palewise in period armory. However, that design motif has a long history in Society heraldry, and so we are not inclined to banish it at this time. Therefore, the motif of multiple charges in annulo or in orle, where the charges are not in their default orientation is henceforth considered a step from period practice." http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2012/12/12-12cl.html#6

11: Rory Buchanan - New Name & New Device

Bendy azure and argent, a chief embattled gules.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Bendy azure and argent, a chief embattled gules.

12: Saerlaith Arnbjornkona - New Name & New Device

Purpure, a bend checky Or and vert between two domestic cats couchant reguardant argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded as <Sáerlaith Arnbjarnarkona>. The name was not correctly formed. The genitive form of -bjorn is -bjarnar making the byname
<Arnbjarnarkona>. After consulting with the submitter they chose the documented spelling of the given name with the accent. This name combines Middle Gaelic and Old Norse which is permitted by SENA Appendix C. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon:  Purpure, a bend checky Or and vert between two domestic cats couchant reguardant argent.

13: Salðis Domnalsdóttir
- New Name & New Device

Per chevron azure and paly wavy azure and Or, on a chevron Or nine ogresses.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel as <Saldís Domnalsdóttir>. The documented spelling of the given name is <Saldís> and not the submitted <Salðís>. The name has been changed to match the documented spelling. The patronymic was documented as an Irish name but formed using Old Norse construction. You cannot mix languages within the same name element. SENA P.N.1.B. says: "A registerable name phrase must follow the rules of grammar and structure for a single time and place. It may not mix languages unless that mixing of languages within a name phrase is attested as a period practice." Fortunately Goutte d'Eau Herald was able to find Domnall in Scandinavian sources so it looks like <Domnalsdóttir> should be possible.

14: Salðis Domnalsdóttir
- New Badge

Paly wavy azure and Or, on a bordure Or nine ogresses.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for violating SENA A. 3. B. 4. b. Identifiability. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3B4b Most of the field has no contrast with the border. It might work, if redrawn with the field colors flipped so that the side edges are blue.

15: Waldetrudis von Metten - New Name & New Device

Per pale gules and argent two vested bishop arms addorsed maintaining croziers in saltire counterchanged in base a point pointed plumetty azure and Or.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per pale gules and argent two vested bishop arms addorsed sustaining croziers in saltire counterchanged in base a point pointed plumetty azure and Or.

16: Zygmunt Nadratowski
- New Augmentation of Arms

Per pale argent and gules, a cross fourchy between the tines of each fork a roundel sable, and for augmentation a dragon's claw holding a rapier sable.

ROUGE SCARPE: Withdrawn by submitter. The arm holding the rapier could not be distinguished as a dragon's claw. It could have been reblazoned as just a arm but the submitter chose to withdraw it for a redraw instead to keep it a dragons claw/jamb.

Added: Middle, Kingdom of - New Heraldic title

Gold Mace Herald

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel. Since item #5 above had to be returned the Crown and Dragon Herald have agreed to register the title to the Kingdom and transfer it once registered. "Heraldic titles may be submitted by the individual or may be transferred to the individual with the approval of the owning branch and the kingdom to which it belongs." http://heraldry.sca.org/admin.html#II.A
