March 20, 2015

Greetings unto all who read these words from Meister Konrad Mailander, Rouge Scarpe Herald,

This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptance and Returns for the items on the February 17th, 2015 ILoI.

My thanks to Jean Yves de Chierebourg, Andreas von Meißen, ffride wlffsdotter, Magnus von Lübeck, and Chaya Simcha bat Yonah for their commentary.

If you would like to see the documentation or commentary for this letter please go to https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=3089

SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory, the current rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red. Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.

1: Annabelle Rose - New Name & New Device

Per saltire sable and gules, a unicorn passant between in pale two roses argent.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon:
Per saltire sable and gules, a unicorn passant between in pale two roses argent.

2: Aodhagán mac Cellach - New Device

Per pall sable, vert, and Or, an eagle argent and two battle axes counterchanged.

ROUGE SCARPE:  His name is on the February 18th External Letter of Intent as <Aodhagán mac Ceallaigh>. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per pall sable, vert, and Or, an eagle argent and two battle axes counterchanged.

3: Ástriðr Arnsdóttir
- New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel as <Ástríðr Arnardóttir>. The submitter indicated that they would like a early Old Norse name (700-850). The source of the documentation for Arn has it as a 13th century name. Ǫrn appears to be the Old Norse variant of the name. This difference does not make a lot of difference for the byname, just the documentation used. The genitive (possessive) form of either would be Arnar- and not Arns- so the correct formation would be Arnardóttir. The name has been changed to the proper genitive construction. The submitter marked no major changes and the change from using the 13th Century Arn to using the Old Norse Ǫrn would probably be considered a major change. The submitter has been contacted for their permission to make this change in case this is a problem and we are awaiting reply.

4: Aturdokht of Dark River
- Resub Device

Argent a wyvern erect vert and a pawprint sable and a base rayonny gules.

ROUGE SCARPE: Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Argent, between a wyvern erect vert and a base rayonny gules a pawprint sable.

5: Gaelen Ó Gráda
- New Name & New Device

Per bend sinister vert and sable, two sheaves of arrows Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel. The submitter would prefer the byname to be <Ó Grádaigh> at this point there is not sufficient documentation of that spelling found to make that change, the request will be included on the external letter with the hope that Laurel level commenters can provide the necessary documentation.  Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon:  Per bend sinister vert and sable, two sheaves of arrows Or.

6: Margaret MacLeod of Dunvegan
- New Name & New Device

Sable, a circle of six mullets of six points Or, and a mullet of six points Or centered in the circle.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Sable, a mullet of six points within six mullets of six points in annulo Or. There is a possible conflict, Kate Wood February of 1975 (via the East): "Sable, six mullets in bend, three and three, Or." They should be clear due to change in arrangement from in bend to in Annulo according to SENA A.5.E.4. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A5E4

4. Change of Arrangement of the Primary Charge Group: A new submission which substantially changes the arrangement of the primary charges from a piece of protected armory does not conflict with it. In cases where armory has an arrangement which is forced by the field, no difference can be obtained for arrangement of those charges. It does not matter whether the forced arrangement is in the registered item or the new submission. The following groups of arrangements are substantially different from each other, while arrangements listed in the same group are not substantially different from each other; other arrangements cannot apply this rule, but may still qualify for a distinct change under A.5.G below:
    •in pale
    •in fess
    •in bend •in bend sinister
•in saltire, and two and two, and crossed in saltire
    •in cross
•two and one, and three, two, and one
    •in orle and in annulo
