If you would like to see the documentation or commentary for this letter please go to https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=3136

SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory, the current rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with ROUGE SCARPE: and are in red. Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.

1: Bethac MacDonald of Cnoc - New Name & New Device

Sable, a circle of six mullets of six points Or, and a mullet of six points Or centered in the circle. A bordure Or.

ROUGE SCARPE:
Name forwarded to Laurel as <Bethoc MacDonald of Cnoc>. Insufficient documentation was provided to support the submitted spelling <Bethac> as a period spelling but <Bethoc> was attested as a period spelling so it has been changed to match the documentation. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Sable, seven mullets of six points one, two, one, two and one within a bordure Or. The submitter should know that there are several possible conflicts that have been brought up in commentary but they are not clearly conflicts and will require rulings by the Wreath Herald.

2: Duncan Burns - New Name & New Device

Sable, a chevron vert fimbriated argent and in base on a plate a brazier sable enflamed vert.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Sable, a chevron vert fimbriated argent and in base on a plate a brazier sable enflamed vert.

3: Eremon FitzGerald - New Device Change

Per pale gules and azure, a tree blasted and couped and eight mullets of six points in orle argent.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for conflict with ffolan O Banan (January of 2007 via An Tir): Per chevron sable and vert, a tree blasted and eradicated within seven mullets of eight points in annulo argent. There is one DC for the field but there is not a DC between seven vs. eight mullets or six vs. eight points.

4: Erin Nic Duglas Crawford Fitzgerald - New Name Change & New Badge

Sable, a sunflower Or within a bordure Or and sable.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. There are some issues with the construction but Alys Blue Tyger has offered to assist the submitter and I have sent her Alys' contact information. It is our hope that the problems can be worked out during the external commentary period. Badge forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Sable, a sunflower Or within a bordure checky Or and sable.

5: Faolan mac Domhnaill - Resub Device

Erminois, on a pale purpure two badgers rampant sable. Vert quatrefoil in right hand, Or ale chalice jeweled vert overflowing in left hand.

ROUGE SCARPE:  Returned for low contrast between the tertiary group, the sable badgers and the primary charge, the purpure pale they are on. This violates SENA A.3.B.4.a "Tertiary charge groups are considered to be placed on the underlying charge group and must have good contrast with that charge group." http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3B4a Also having the tertiary group maintaining another charge is also cause for return.
SENA Appendix I.C says "A single charge group may only have one tertiary charge group on it." A charge cannot be in the same group as a charge it is maintaining, and thus the maintained charges are a separate group from the badgers, and not permitted. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#AppendixIC

6: Hrafna Ivarr - New Name & New Device

Per saltire azure and argent, two ravens respectant regardant sable, and two wolves couchant argent.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel as <Hrafna-Ivarr>. We have added the hyphen used with prepended bynames according to precedent.

"When Norse bynames are prepended (added before the given name, as with Little John), a hyphen is placed between the byname and given name in standardized Old Norse. Documentary forms appear in many ways, but a hyphen is compatible with documentary forms as well. As such, we have restored the name to its submitted form. [Digr-Jǫkull Snorrasson, 09/2011, A-Trimaris]"

Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per saltire azure and argent, two ravens respectant regardant sable, and two wolves couchant contourny argent.

7: Muirnech Caitriona inghean Robert - New Name

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel as <Caitriona Mhuirnech inghean Roibeaird>. According to the documentation the descriptive byname goes AFTER the given name and need to be lenited.

"Quick and Easy Gaelic Names," by Sharon Krossa (http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#descriptivewithpatronymic) states: The standard way to form a name using combined descriptive adjective with simple patronymic bynames for women is: < single given name> <descriptive adjective (always lenited with certain exceptions)> inghean <father's given name (in genitive case & always lenited unless starting with D, T, L, N, R, or a vowel)>

Also according to SENA PN.1.B.1: 1. Single Time and Place: A registerable name phrase must follow the rules of grammar and structure for a single time and place. It may not mix languages unless that mixing of languages within a name phrase is attested as a period practice. http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#PN1B1 Therefore the Gaelic <inghean> cannot be combined with the Scots <Robert>. <Roibeaird> is the genitive form of <Roibeard>, the Gaelic cognate of Robert. So the fully Gaelic <inghean Roidbeaird> has replaced <inghean Robert>.

8: Petronella von Eisenberg - New Name

ROUGE SCARPE:  Forwarded to Laurel.

9: Roana Aldinoch - New Household Name

Hus Gyldenbrocc

ROUGE SCARPE: Forwarded to Laurel. The submitter should be aware that for registration the naming pattern as well as the elements need to be documented. It is being sent on with the hopes that documentation for the pattern can be found during the external commentary period.

10: Roana Aldinoch
- New Badge

(Fieldless) A badger's pawprint Or.

ROUGE SCARPE: Returned for conflict with Harald Bodvarson (October of 1982 via Ansteorra): "Gules, a boar's hoofprint Or.", Barak Elandris Bear the Wallsbane (August of 1989 via the East): "Per chevron inverted grady sable and Or, masoned sable, in chief a bear's paw print Or.", and Luciano Giovanni di Churburg (February of 1987 via the Middle): "Purpure, chape ploye Or, ermined purpure, a bear's paw print Or." There is a DC for being Fieldless but none between different pawprints of hoof prints. Precedent: [March 2013 LoAR, R-Outlands] Wilhelm Reissen. Device. Vert, three pawprints within a bordure Or.
This device is returned for conflict with the device of Watt Kidman, Vert, three goat's hoofprints inverted Or. Neither pawprints nor hoofprints are period heraldic charges. While they do not look similar, both are impressions made by feet of animals; we feel this is similar to the distinction between different types of abstract symbols. In other words, there is a blazonable distinction, but no difference as far as conflict is concerned. There is therefore a DC for the addition of the bordure, but nothing else.
There is a step from period practice for the use of pawprints.

11: Sorcha inghean uí Dhonnchaidh - Resub Device Change

Argent, three fleurs-de-lis between flaunches azure.

ROUGE SCARPE: Forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Argent, three fleurs-de-lis in pale between flaunches azure.

12: Wilhelm von Eisenberg - New Name & New Device

Per pale azure and vert, a castle and in chief four mullets of five points argent.

ROUGE SCARPE: Name forwarded to Laurel. Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Per pale azure and vert, a castle and in chief four mullets argent.
