Greetings unto all who read these words from Meister Konrad Mailander, Dragon Herald, filling in for Sybella of Dragon's Mark, Rouge Scarpe Herald,

This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptance and Returns for the items on the April 4th 2017 ILoI and May 8th 2017 ILoI.

My thanks to all for their commentary.

If you would like to see the documentation or commentary for this letter please go to http://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=4401 and http://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingloi.php?kingdom=4&loi=4464

SENA refers to The Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory, the current rules for submissions.

My decision and comments are prefaced with DRAGON: and are in red. Items that are accepted will be forwarded to Laurel as a Middle LoI posted on OSCAR.
April 1: Alonso Mano Negro -New Name & New Device

Per pale Or and argent, a clenched gauntlet and a bordure sable

DRAGON: Name forwarded to Laurel.

Device returned for lack of contrast. The emblazon has a argent gauntlet on a half argent field. It is blazoned as being sable and if it was colored that way on the emblazon it would be clear of this issue.

Gyronny of twelve argent and azure, an escallop Or

DRAGON: Returned for conflict with Tir-y-Don, Barony of "Gyronny argent and azure, a whelk, bell in chief, Or." [06/88 via Atlantia]. There is no DC for the different number of gyrons on the field. "No DC for escallop versus whelk (Batonvert has demonstrated, through multiple examples, that escallops and whelks were interchanegable in period armory. Therefore, unless future evidence to the contrary is presented, all shells will be considered to conflict with all other shells. [Theodosia Ouranos of Constantinople, May 2010, R-Meridies])." A better blazon would be: Gyronny of twelve azure and argent, an escallop inverted Or. There may be a DC for the orientation of the shell as it is an escallop inverted verses an upright whelk but that would be the only one.

We suggest trying to obtain a letter of permission to contact. Contract info for the Baron and Barones:  baron AT tirydon.atlantia.sca.org and baroness AT tirydon.atlantia.sca.org Aidan of Kingswood and Hannah of Kingswood

April 19: Skjaldvor Há-máni -New Name & New Device

Per bend sinister argent and azure mullety argent, a bend sinister wavy gules, in canton a chatloup sejant sable armed gules

DRAGON: Name returned for improper construction. Both the prefix <Há-> and the byname <máni> would be refering to <Skjaldvor>, "Há-Skjaldvor máni." Both bynames are referring to Skjaldvor, and so she's "High-Skjaldvor" and "Skjaldvor moon" but not "High-moon." The submitter allows no major changes which reordering the name elements to <Há-Skjaldvor máni> would be.

Device returned with name. Unfortunately a holding name cannot be created at the Kingdom level and the device must be returned along with the name.

April 20: Unn Olafsdottir -New Name

DRAGON: Name forwarded to Laurel. Submitter should be aware that we are uncertain whether Anglicised" Old Norse is registerable. <Unnr Óláfsdóttir> or <Unnr Olafsdottir> would work for 10th Century Icelandic if it is not.

April 21: Vígfúss mjǫksiglandi -New Name & New Device

Gyronny arrondi argent goutty de sang and azure

DRAGON: Name forwarded to Laurel.

Device forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: Gyronny arrondi argent goutty de sang and azure

April 22: Wodebok Adamsone -New Name

DRAGON: Name pended awaiting feedback from the submitter. Wodebok is a 14th Century nickname style byname and is too early for the pattern of using bynames as given names.

DRAGON: Badge forwared to Laurel with the blazon: (Fieldless) A squirrel sable maintaining with both paws a balance Or

DRAGON: Badge forwarded to Laurel with the blazon: (Fieldless) A yale rampant vert, spotted and armed argent, breathing fire proper. Since it was commented on, Principal and Submission heralds can vouch for the identity of the sender of a Letter of Permission to Conflict by email if it is not physically signed. The Admin Handbook has not yet been updated to reflect this ruling.

May 8: Godhit of Cynnabar -New Name

DRAGON: Name forwarded to Laurel.
May 9: Mary of Desborough -New Device

Sable, between two dragons combatant an arrow inverted Or and on a chief argent three helms azure.

DRAGON: Retuned for lack of a registered or in submission SCA Name. It seems she made the unfortunately not unheard of mistake of thinking that by getting a membership card with their SCA name means it is registered. I advised her she would have to submit a name and resubmit the device.

May 10: Qamar bint Vartam al-Jayhani -New Name

DRAGON: Forwarded to Laurel as <Qamar bint al-Jayhani>. <Vartam> is an Armenian name. There was not enough evidence provided of the mix of Armenian and Arabic names. The submitter listed <al-Jayhani> as the important element. We believe that removing the Armenian name element may make the name registerable.
May 11: Raja Culamani of Chennai -New Name

DRAGON: Name forwarded to Laurel as <Rāja Cūḷāmaṇi of Chennai>.
