[Middlebridge] SCA in 50 years - long term planning

As a purely mental exercise, we were debating the SCA 50 years hence.
Many different visions came out, which I thought to share with you. I'd
also like your opinions on some issues brought up.

I saw our future SCA as a major recreational activity, with a cable
channel, half a million members, theme parks permanently situated in
similar stead to ren-fests, and wars almost every month in each of the
100 Kingdoms of the known world.

Some agreed with me, but the majority thought our growth was about over,
and things would remain largely as they are today. I see this as folly.
Even if we don't continue our current explosive growth rate, I think
we'll still grow.

I asked about long term planning in our group - and was told "There is
none, and no reason to plan, it's a hobby." I suggested that we could
benefit from some estate planning, for example asking life-long members
to CONSIDER donating 5% of the worth of their estate in their wills. I
was not asking much, nor insisting it be done. This would be a
"free-will" offering. I for one am drafting a clause to donate to my
local Barony a substantial amount, well in excess of our current balance,
to fund an awesome wake in my name, upon my death (I think $5K should buy
a nice tidy little event, heh?)

I thought we could think about buying an event site, complete with woods
and showers and a dance hall and feast hall and stables (it went on and
on). I was roundly trounced for even suggesting such a thing!!! I was
told even if we got the money to afford such a place, and savings to
cover upkeep/maintenance/events, that it would be too difficult to do.

My Bridge Compatriots, _Do_ I DREAM too big? Are my sights set on a
visions clouded by lack of reason? Should we not seek a place of our
own? Are we doomed to wander the Gypsy path from site to site until
every VFW, High School Gym, and Grange has duct tape repair work from SCA
visits?
