Magnus,
you are a man that I like. Your dreams are right on. As many of us old timers
once were. I agree with everything that you said. I once argued with Queen
Catherine ( Dagan'sCatherine ) ( in her kitchen over tea) her belief that SCA
fighting was a recreation and not a sport. I said that whenever one person is
proclaimed a victor it is a sport , and went on to suggest that we institute
marshalls that wore black and white striped tunics. The discussion eventually
lead to the endpoint that as more people joined the SCA , that did not
fight, or get involved in the arts that the only thing they would be able to
provide would be rules, bureaucracy, and politics. Here comes my point. The
incrediblly thick layers that these people have created over the years push
that dream even further away. Can you imagine the fights that would develop
just in naming a permanent site or the fights over "legalities". A thousand
armchair lawyers would argue while the sane members silently would pick up
shovels and start digging. In order to move away from VFW halls and such ,
we would have to actually start working and stop the weekly tournament
circuit.
Your dream and idea is good and I know many would love to see it come to
fruition. I would. I just don't have faith in our governing system. It erodes
more and more every day , as I see things up close and I realize that we
have a corporation that is absolutely clueless to the needs of the members.
We need more kingdoms. The Middle Kingdom is too big. Why don't you and i get
together and start developing your ideas , but drop the non -profit
educational hooey , and do a la the country club type set up. It would work.
Keep dreaming Magnus and don't give up on the possibility.

Coley
