This is a great idea for the normal demo; but probably doesn't work as well
at Jubilee. For those of you who have never been there, it is not the
ordinary SCA demo, although we certainly provide much of the panoply. There
are 40,000 to 50,000 people from all over the central Illinois area who show
up (what we used to call "mundanes" but don't anymore). While it is
certainly the best recruitment tool that Illiton has, it is much more than
that. It has long been one of my favorite events, and I look forward to
going each year, even though we rarely get home before 11:00 at night on
Sunday and last year we had to pack in the middle of a tornado (well, horrid
thunderstorm complete with 20 minutes of hail -- and it did spawn a tornade
about ten miles later).
I must put in a special plea, however. If you are planning to attend
Jubilee, plan to "work." You must at least be willing to march in the parade
both mornings and stay on the fairground to add "color" during some of the
day. The State of Illinois actually pays money to the SCA for its services,
and this money provides the Middle Kingdom with some of its operating funds;
but as most of you remember: TANSTAAFL!
