$4500 would get you one damn fine suit of armor. $400 - $500 on the other
hand will get you the basic pieces if you shop carefuly. Expect in the $200
range for the helm alone.
> I recommend my teacher Peter Laughlin. He is an excellent armourer
Allow me to add my voice to those in praise of this gentle. I ordered a helm
from him at 12th nite and it was in my hands in just over a week. I did
need to make a slight adjustment (cut 1" off the back to accomodate my hump).
He offered free adjustments, but I decided to do it myself to avoid the
shipping hassle (He's in Mpls, I'm not). The helm is a beatutiful piece of
work, and gets numerous compliments. He calls it a "modified sugarloaf",
which appears to be his opening price openface helm at about $175. (He makes
barrel-type helms for less, but I can't breathe in those things).
Craftsmanship like his is well worth the price.
On the other hand, if you want "fugly" (functional-ugly) that can be had
pretty cheaply. It describes the rest of my harness, which I hide under a
tabbard. (and no, thats not what I was wearing at Castle Fever. Mine is even
uglier)
You may be able to find a student armorer who will work for little or
nothing just for practice. Here in Rudivale we have an individual who is
teaching himself, as there are no other armorers in the vicinity. (Cadwollen
noticed some of his pieces at the Arts Tea last year, but they haven't had a
chance to meet yet). He makes armor for the joy of it. Remeber, the barter
system is alive and well in the SCA. Brendan just finished a very nice
Sutton Hoo helmet in exchange for a mail coif, knees in trade for a knife,
and a gorget just because he wanted to try the pattern. You can probaly find
someting similar in your area wherever that is.
