I have done both, although I prefer knotwork. Several of my outfits are
trimmed in such, and I am trying to get one gown done before Lillies so
that a Laurel out there can stop nagging me about my progress (mostly lack
thereof). And I have done a number of baby gowns and children's tunics
with knotwork medallions -- washable, pretty, and easy (for me), faster
than sewing on trim.

BTW, the Laurel's research says that stem stitch is appropriate, but I use
chain stitch because it is easier for me, also thicker.
