Badger writes (in reply to Master Volkovitch)

<<The point I was trying to make to Purple was about a guy WHO HAS NO INTENTION
of ever playing, wanting to play or even learning. He juse wants to pose with
the damn thing becouse it 'Looks Cool'.>>

SO WHAT? If that is his thing in the SCA, why do you have a problem with that?
Does it get in your way? Do you buy the lute for him? Does it not match his
garb?

If someone wanted to buy a CATAPULT and drag THAT around behind him at every
event, I could see people haveing a problem. But a sword (properly controlled
so you don't wack people in the shins) or a lute (properly controlled so you
don't wack people in the arm) is nothing that should be part of a rank or
standing. Maybe that guy bought the lute just so he could look cool. And
maybe, in the process of looking cool, he accidentally strums the damn thing,
realizes how wonderful it sounds, and like the immortal Monkees (quick! who can
name all four! I can't :) will learn to play the instrument. Or, maybe, like
the other immortal group, Milli Vanilli (did they have names?) he won't. Where
is the insult? No skin off my back.

<< I was putting the whole thread into a perspective that purple might be able
to relate
to.>>

I don't particularly relate to it just because it involves a lute. And I don't
relate to it because I don't buy things just to look cool (anymore). But what
difference does that make?

What about the 5'0", 350 lbs woman who wants to walk around in a
bunnyfur bikini?>>

What about her? I don't think that you want to get into this discussion on the
open bridge -- you're treading close to insulting many fine contributors to the
SCA, some of whom wear bunnyfur, some of whom don't. And I don't think it has
anything to do with the topic of conversation.
