When my nylon dome got tired, I replaced it in a somewhat unorthodox
manner. I wanted a period look, but did not want to give up sewn-in
floor and insect screening so I crossed an octagonal pavilion with a
dome tent. I ended with a smaller edifice than either of the ones you
mention, but there is no centre pole in the living area so there is
nothing to get in the way of what I want to do. It is nylon so it dries
quickly enough that I do not worry about the mold that can occur on
standing canvas in a series of foggy nights. Should I have to strike
wet, I don't have to cope with a couple of hundred pounds of wet canvas.
I just hang it on a neighbour's clothesline. It is just over 10'from
flat side to flat side.

There are other advantages. Like a standard pavilion, I can use the fly
without the tent for shade only. My windows provide ventilation and
privacy. During the major Pennsic storm last year the interior was
completely dry. The whole thing goes in my van with the door closed.
Costwise it fit into $300. CDN.

Some people twisted my arm the first time it went up, so I have
published the plans for making it. Let me know if you are interested.

There is a coating on the market now that water and fire prevents in one
application. Formerly it seemed that if you put the waterproof on first
the fire retardant washed off in the rain and if the fire retardant went
on first it doesn't keep the usual brands of waterproofing from burning
like crazy. If anybody knows of a product which protects from UV as
well as fire and leaks, please let me know.

Myfi.
