[Mid] alchemy--??

Greetings! I am a member of the newly formed Meridian Corps of Engineers, a
medieval science guild. I am primarily interested in period alchemy. If
there are any alchemists on this list, please drop this confused novice a
line! What do you do? Given the fact that everything described in texts like
"The Book of Quinte Essence" is either illegal or will kill you (or both)
and some of the other texts are pure philosophy......how do you link the
physical and the philosophical properly? Thanks in advance.
