We buried my Grandpa today.

He would have celebrated his 93rd Birthday December 26th.

The funeral was held at the church he attended and helped to build,
officiated by his pastor - a gentleman who first met my grandfather when he
(the pastor who is about 50) was about 6 years old.

It was a nice service - he had lots of nice things to say about Grandpa.
Then he started giving a sermon. (it's part of the deal - if they get you
into church they will preach to you! :) He spoke about being saved, and
that people don't do good works to get saved, they do good works because
they are saved.

(now, don't get your panties in a bunch about the religion - there is an
sca-related point here - just bear with me! :)

I immediately began thinking about some of the topics we've been discussing
here on the bridge - awards, recognition, etc. My cousin-in-laurelhood,
Nicolaa has certainly expressed eloquent thoughts, and
He-whom-we-all-respect, Finnvarr was about as succinct as a person could
be.

But I translated the sermon into peerage stuff - and came up with the
following:

You don't do good stuff to become a Peer, you do good stuff because you ARE
a Peer.

Good stuff includes ( but is not limited to) teaching, running
events/activities, helping someone ELSE to run events/activities, leading
by example, following by example. And taking Joy in the things you do.
And when you are having fun, it doesn't matter about the award stuff. (i
know, i got mine, but i really mean it!)

Do what you Love. Love what you Do.

grandchild, but the first one he got to hold and play with and spend lots
of time with)

Devoted Eldest Daughter (and eldest child) of Maurice Gene Roden (who is a
way cool guy and grieving tonight for his loss)

And these last two are far more important to me than the first has ever
been.

Or ever will be.
