Greetings one and all! Allow me to takea wee bit of your time to tell you
of several "must-own" books if you are a scribal type. These books have
served me well as research tools and I feel obliged, as a scribe,
apprentice to a laurel in callig/illum and a Companion of the Willow, to
share this information with you:

The Craftsman's Handbook (Il Libro dell'arte) by Cennino Cennini
pub. by Dover Books, 1933/1960. ISBN 0-486-20054-X $6.95

The Materials and Techniques of Medieval Painting by Daniel V. Thompson
(who translated Il Libro dell'arte, BTW!) pub. by Dover Books, 1956
ISBN 0-486-20327-1 $8.95

On Divers Arts by Theophilus, pub. by Dover Books, 1979
ISBN 0-486-23784-2 $9.95

Medieval Craftsmen: Scribes and Illuminators by Christopher DeHamel
pub. by University of Toronto Press 1994 (not sure of cost)
ISBN 0-8020-7707-2

Time Sanctified: The Book of Hours in Medieval Art and Life by Roger S.
Wieck, pub. in association with the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, by
Braziller Books 1988 ISBN 0-8076-1189-1 (not sure of cost)

A History of Illuminated Manuscripts bu Christopher DeHamel
pub. by Phaidon, 1986, (first edition, anyway) $45.00 (there is a second
ed. out that I think is more expensive) ISBN 0-87923-631-0

These are books that I would urge you to put on your Christmas list for
you friends and family. They are all "must-own" reference books for the
serious scribe. I use them constantly for documentation purposes!
