So Jen, throwing in his tuppence (okay, five-pence; he's long winded) says
Yes, there is only one Hotel nearby. As a matter of fact, when my
Knight checks us in each year he reserves the same rooms for next year at
the same time. We've got a two-story suite and the room behind it that has
a connecting door, as well as one more room next door. This affords plenty
of crash space. "Kyburg Heights" isn't wasted if we can't fill it up with
household members: if we discover that not enough house members can attend,
we open the space for our friends.
Camping conditions aren't bad. I've camped at my first two Gulf
Wars (numbers 2 and 3), and hotel-ing it for numbers 4, 5, and 6, though
occasionally staying overnight on-site when a party was in full swing. This
last year was the first time we've had uncomfortably chilly evenings at Gulf
Wars, combined with a little rain (some friends of mine in Minneapolis say
that if it could rain, then it's not truly 'cold'!). It sure beats the
first two GW's, when they held it in June. True, we teachers didn't have to
take any days off in June, but it was way too hot and humid to fight all day
(worse than Pennsic gets), but they hold it in March now and the daytime
temperatures are pretty nice. I believe it's the weekend before St.
Patrick's Day.
They have equestrian events as well as archery, and as of last year
the fighting was nicely spread out over a couple days so you didn't wipe
yourself out in one day. This also leaves a lot more time that you're in
armor that you can find pick-up fights and melees, as well as have different
"challenge tourneys" hosted by different Kingdoms. They have a large wooden
fortress there and seige weapons of all sorts aren't just allowed, they're
*encouraged*! They all have to be inspected by the marshallate, however.
We have trebouchets, catapults, ballistas, and more. No one ever
successfully entered the fortress until the second year, when our household
built several small, handheld ramps in addition to our large, wheeled ramp
with retractable wheels.
One warning: the final court is ridiculously long for a War this
size (I know, 'big surprise'). People from *many* Kingdoms attend, so it's
a good way to meet folks from places you may be interested in visiting,
moving to, or just curious about.
Hope to meet many of you in person at the War!
In Service,
Jen
