Let me say that, while I didn't know Jafar well, I would have liked to.
Cinn spoke of him a lot and I would have liked to've said something in
reply other than "Uh huh" or "I didn't know that - really?" I do know
that he was gifted with aplomb and a sense of humor and kindness. I
have a couple of stories, one of which I would like to share now.

It was November 13, 1993 in Dragon's Vale. The fighting was excellent,
the merchants were many, and in spite of the fact he was now a King
rather than His Highness - as he was when I first really met him - I set
out to talk to Jafar if only for a few moments.

It was the fighters against the "Dragon" that day and I must say I
thought the beast did a good job of defense. I had thought Jafar was
the head of the critter and, while we were chatting, I mentioned this.
Jafar said that no, he had been one of the claws. I nodded and then
politely said I didn't want to take all his time. As we were going our
separate ways, I turned and asked him if it was true, as Jafar al-Safa
he'd been born in the desert. He got an odd look on his face and
answered in the affirmative. I grinned and said, "Then I guess that
makes you "Sandy Claws," doesn't it?" The corners of his mouth quirked
and he just sort of shook his head and walked off. He probably thought
I was mad as a Hatter.

He and Queen Catherine gave me my AoA anyway at Court that night. ;->>

I don't josh with Peers as a matter of course. I need to know them or
feel comfortable in their presence enough to know I'll get away with it
pretty much unscathed. Jafar was one such person.

Bet
