Greetings!

Trying to strike a balance between sympathy for Her Highness and encouraging
her to register or devise medieval style heraldry is difficult. I'm sure
she's got other things on her mind at the moment than whether her device
will pass.

However.....
It would be doing her a service to help her devise something that is
medieval style and might actually pass. As I said, the flamingo is not
really a problem. They seem to both have been known in period and also
resemble other birds used in medieval heraldry.

When I've done heraldic consulting, I've always enjoyed having folks come up
to me with..uh, interesting drawings and saying "Can I register this?" I
never say, "No, that's not period." I say something like "This is an
interesting concept--let's work with it." Usually a short explanation of
heraldic rules follows and then we start playing around. It's usually
possible to take a drawing which breaks every heraldic rule in the book and
turn it into something in a medieval style that retains some essence of the
first drawing AND makes the client happy. Often I find just plopping down
with someone with a PicDic gives people an idea of possible charges,
arrangements, and so forth.

I often give people a little thought experiement, too. "Imagine a medieval
army lined up for battle, or a grand tournament. Imagine the knights on
horseback, their shields carried proudly. Imagine yours is one of them.
Does it fit in? Could you pick it out of the lineup as the non-medieval
one? If you can't, you've likely got something there."

Good heraldry can go very far. The first device I thought of was His
Majesty's personal device, with the two stags/deer. The second is Viscount
Syr Menken's chequey and red heraldry that can be spotted a mile away.
Those are both excellent devices, and whaddaya know--they're known now by
people who haven't even ever met either of these good Sirs.

I think it would be an appropriate gift to Her Highness to help her to find
something registerable, once some time has passed. One final note: Since
Jafar has passed on, can a device (something with a salamander) still be
registered to him?

Cheers--
Nicolaa de Bracton
