'Fraid I can't help you with more than a Yea, I've seen it too, and that's
what you call it and yea it's documentable. Dunno if it's period documentable,
but I recall seeing it on several SCA related Heraldry pages. I expect a lot of
capable heralds are going to give you the real info on this.

Again, I don't know about period-ness, but a friend of mine here in the Barony
of Rivenstar recently passed the device "Or, three dragonflies sable" which
looks very spiff. Kinda jealous she got one that simple to pass, mostly because
I never thought to try. Oh, and she points the noses (proboscii?) of the
dragonflies towards the top of the shield either through stubborness or by cue
from the heralds. I assume that since its a flying thingy, default is with the
head chiefward.

I'd say skip the "proper" and go with a single-color insect, maybe dual if you
want to color the wings different (green body, silver wings?). I filled a
8.5x11 sheet of paper with my device and stood it as far away from me as I could
in my appartment to get a feel for what you could and couldn't distinguish.
