And also distressing was his defence: That his years in the SCA had

Not quite accurate, but I can see how you got there.
When faced with a capital crime, with both the hiring party and your
co-felon testifying against you, it is not unexpected, nor shameful, to try
almost any defense.
Amongst the defense ploys was that he was a "mental" defense: that he had
multiple personality disorder, and that it manifested itself in many ways.
Among them his behavior in the SCA. A representative of the SCA was
subpoened for the trial.
I don't blame a desperate man for a desperate defense.
