I checked the definition in the dictionary before I made my comment, which
is why I still contend the using the term "earn" sets a precedent that says
there is a price on a peerage. Do you pay by check or money order?

Please understand that steering away from this term will free the "awards
and ranks" from certain stigma and expectations such as the "AOA in one
year" issue that has been a typical sticking point from time to time.

On the flip side, if such things are to be earned, then set some clear and
unambiguous standards for people to achieved and you will eliminate some of
the arbitrariness that appears from time to time.
