Right you are! I have attended a couple of "New World Feasts" that were
done very well, and have done specific Late Period feasts where the
presence of certain foods was explained by the fact that they were
novelty foods recently brought back from expeditions to the New World. I
have seen some rather clever justification done.
In fact, we found some mention in an article (I think it was the
National Geographic "Our Vegetable Travelers") that capsicums were used
as a medicinal almost immediately while as a food they were avoided for a
while. However, I don't like the inclusion of obvious non-period foods
in a feast that doesn't purport to be a novelty. Most people, even
nobles, just didn't see or eat this stuff ( i.e. maize, squash, potatoes,
etc. ) .
If you want to read the reems of opinions from Meridies about the
presence of New World foods vs. "Period Foods" in any given feast, let me
know, I'll email you privately. (Take a few days off, our populace is
diverse and verbose on the subject).
