Being a newbie (but a newbie with a tendancy to be long winded) I'm gonna
throw in my 3 or 4 cents... :)
> >1) It's gotten too big. Way too big.
I like beiing at events with lots of people.. Caer Antwerth (begging
forgiveness on spelling, as usual...) Boar's head had a LOT of people, and
that was by far the best event I have atteneded. Northshie;d Coronet runs
a close second, but I like getting to know peole, even though I ama bit
shy in large groups where I don't know many people.. but people do come
up and talk to me... And I think that's really cool.
> >2) Courtesy.
I love the courtesy I am shown... I really do. I'm also VERY not used to
it... I'm not very good at accepting compliments (much to my lord's
dismay...) and I'm used to having to fend for myself in the big group,
struggling with doors and carrying large loads, and since I've been in the
society, I don't have to worry about "how am I going to open this door
with boxes in my arms back and teeth?" because 9 times out of ten, someone
will help me with my load, and 99% someone will open the door. At Boar's
Head, I was annoucing when the classes were starting, and what time it
was, etc, etc, and Duke Conn made a point of thanking me for it, just
before court. I thought I was going to pass out, "Conn? Conn wants to
see me? *why*?" ::giggles::
This one, I may have to agree with... ::sighs:: I have seen a few people
acting it what appears to be untter and complete persona, (duke Conn being
one of them.) But it seems that a lot of peoplejust have a name and then
make whatever period garb they want. I know that a costuming laural has
garb that spans over a five hundred years, if not more. Anyways, I'd like
to try and stay in complete persona (I'm a theatre major, darnit! This
should be one character I can create!) but I'm afraid of what people will
think if I try... (it's that self-consciousness again... I seem to have
more than my fair share.)

> >4) Maybe my poverty is a bit of a problem.
Agree up to a point. I am a Poor Starving College Student. (starving you
better beleive... the dorm food here is terrible! Feast is a VERY
welcome detour from it.) and I am working on making my own garb... I won
a bolt of fabric at Nordskogen 12th night That I'm going to make stuff out
of, and once I flog that horse to death, I'm going to donate what's left
to the shire so they can have a crack at it. I have a second-hand sewing
machine, and I have a friend in Caid who make sme garb for my birthday and
Christmas. I make good use of crash space, (the main saving grace that
enables me to stay in the Society... I canNOT afford hotels.. I can
barely afford to help my ride's pay for gas.) and I bless the soul who
thought of that idea. I will wash your feet. Really.
As for activities, I went to my first two events mainly to people watch
and figure out what I wanted to do... and came back from the Althing with
a vague thought that maybe heraldry would be fun... two weeks later, our
shire persuiviant annouced he needed a deputy herald to take over for him
in the next year or so... and The Gimp Herald was born. (long story, but
The Gimp Herald is me) the next three events I went to, I site heralded,
and much fun was had by all. The best thing about heraldry is... it's
free to pretty darn cheap. I've spent $7 on my new hobby, and that was to
make a baldric.
Eventually, I want to do expensive stuff, fighting, rapier combat,
equestrian.. btu I can wait until I don't have to worry about where I'll
put the darn horse and my living accomodations expand beyond 14x11.
> >5)Awards.
Agree here... I knwo SOOO many people who deserve AoAs who don't have
them, and the problem is, people aren't writing in. Apathy, again. My
Shire is apparently known as the Shire no one writes from. I'm guilty of
that. I admit it. This weekend, I will change that. People, WRITE IN!
I'm not kidding. I know my word doesn't carry any weight, I can just be
really loud, but write in. If everyone thinks. "Oh, someone else will
write them in for an award..." then no one is getting any. It pretty
simple.
Alright, that would be me in my breif time on the soapbox. ::steps down
off said soapbox:: Next?
