My first event was Simple Day, A.S. XXVII, I think. Jafar was
king and I was sixteen. It was beastly hot and I was wearing a loaner
tunic that hung down below my knees and had ridiculously long dagged
sleeves. Still, I had a wonderful time just strolling around and drinking
in all the sights and smells, drooling over the merchants' wares, enjoying
the company of friends in what seemed to be a perfectly natural setting.

        I didn't go to feast. I didn't see the court. I didn't dance. I
spent my evening around a fire listening to the tunes of John ap Wynn and
others, marveling at the music I had always wanted to make but never knew
where to find. Or even that it existed. I remember delighting in the plays
on words people came up with, being swept away in the sadness of a tragic
ballad, giggling hysterically at jokes I only half-understood. I also
remember one of my friends telling everyone I could sing and announcing
that I would do so.

The song I sang wasn't even remotely period, except by virtue of
being celtic, which automatically makes all things period. Still, it was a
start and it left me hungry for more.

I came home that night with a head full of dreams, my skin tanned
deeply (I kept that tan for two-and-a-half years.) my heart filled with
music and a mysterious itching on my left wrist that had started after the
picnic under the apple tree.

The poison ivy faded quickly and the tan slowly, but the music
only grew and the dreams have borne fruit I never could have imagined.
After all, here I am...
