It doesn't, and therefore I took the rule to mean either or both.

Actually, Sergeant is not an *official* title. If the Society were to
adopt it as an official title for some award or position, it would then be
reserved to only individuals of that position. In the mean time, if Conal
or any other member of the Red Company, or for that matter you or I wish
to call ourself sergeant, we may. It is not an *official* title and
therefore *officially* conveys no position, status or rank.

Exactly. My point remains, if Conal wishes to use the "title" sergeant,
the correct abbreviation is Sgt.
