Greetings from Tarrach!

If you are refering to "the Cookie" being the quest for laureldom, feel
free to read on. If you meant something else, the below response is
irrelevant.

A&S can only demonstrate one aspect (and in my opinion a minor one) of the
qualities needed for a laurel. A&S displays only demonstrate prowess in
the arts, and the ability to do research of a period art form. It is far
more important in my opinion that one researches, teaches and above all
enjoys doing some period art form. Not to mention all of the other
attributes necessary to be a peer. If you are referring to pent.
specifically, to do this correctly is way too time consuming if you are
doing this only for recognition. Teaching lots of classes about some
specific art form would be far more effective and appropriate if one were
bucking for a peerage. In my opinion, A&S is a mechanism for inspiration
to do really neat things and then show them to someone else (along with
the documentation so others can do the art too). However, it should be
noted that unless the face to face thing becomes common place, and there
is time set aside for the artisans to sit with their pieces and meet with
the populace, this later goal is difficult to achieve with the current A&S
format. (Can you hear me Chas?:-). I personally really like the
challenge of the pentathelon as it has (until this year when only myself
and my squire entered) really provided me with a impetus to dig down deep
and learn and do far more than I might have if not otherwise pushed. I am
really looking forward rto next year when (I hear) there are a bunch of
exceptional artisans planning on giving me some particularly keen
competition (which I appreciate a great deal as this year kinda sucked).

The pentathalon can be a part of all of these things. It allows people to
see your work, it allows people to read your documentation (which many
people do not bother to write, no matter how well researched the piece, if
it is not entered in A&S), and it allows you to share your enthusiasm for
your art. The competition should be a joyful thing where people with
enthusiasm for art compare their skill with others, and are rejuvenated by
the enthusiasm of others.
