Well, now, that is going to vary. In my case, it was for a variety of
things. The very first night I walked into an SCA meeting, I became the
group Chronicler, which in those days did not mean putting out a newsletter.
It was more keeping records of the meetings in those days. Then I became
Deputy Pursuivant, taking the job of a "book herald" since even now I am not
endowed with a much of a loud voice. I also started the local Scribe's
Guild, taught scribing to many people, and also learned period dancing and
began to teach it to my local shire. After a year and a half in the SCA, I
received my Award of Arms, and a mere three months later, was elevated to
the Order of the Willow for my work in the Scribal field of providing many
scrolls to TRM Laurelen and Ithriliel as well as teaching many, many
individuals how to scribe. (Yes, for those of you who can remember that far
back, that was exactly 20 years ago!!)
But you don't have to run out and do all that, necessarily. Assist at
events, hold offices, do demos, teach something you love with people, share
your skills with others around you, give freely of your time and energy when
needed without having to be asked, help your local chatelaine (or castellan
if it is a male) with newcomers, - these are but a few of the things you can
do to make the SCA around you a better place. And that is why we do what we
do, first and foremost. Because we love to do it, and the recognition comes
when we show that love to those around us.
I hope that helps somewhat.
