It varies.

There is a fellow in our Barony who's been very active in the SCA for
20 years, and didn't get his AoA until this year, at the Northshield
A&S. He is a pretty good fighter, has done a lot of service (such as
serving on the Board of Directors), etc.

But don't let that disuade you! :)

When I write award recommendations for AoA, I look for any *one* (not
all, just one is good enough) of the following:

1. Have they attempted to register a name and device.
2. Do they volunteer for any service at events.
3. Do they have a local office, or assist a local office.
4. Do they go to practices and participate (like fighting, singing,
dancing).
5. Have they picked an Art or Science and begun researching it.
6. ...other similar activities...

I also look for longevity. I like to see that they've stuck around
for six months or a year, and I ask myself if they are what I would
consider an active member in the Society. If so, I write a letter.

If they have been *really* active, I bug my friends to write a letter
for that gentle.

It took me a few years to get an AoA, but that was fine, because I was
having a lot of fun participating in the SCA, which is really all that
matters.
