I had responded to this privately, but decided to just post it here for all
to see. This is an article I wrote last year that has appeared in the
Pale, and several newsletters and web pages across the Knowne World.

**NEW** SCA Chat Network
Liam O'Shea
Everyone is probably aware, by now, of the countless hundreds of World Wide
Web pages owned, operated, and maintained by the SCA and its members.
Within these pages, should a gentle have time to search through them all,
one can most likely find the answer to almost any question you might have
about the rules, customs, and the SCA in general. But what if there was the
possibility of having that question answered immediately, before spending
all that time. Or, what if you wished to chat with someone you met at an
out of town event, or Pennsic, without watching your far speaker payment
going through the tower? The answer? The SCA Chat Network. I read
somewhere that 75%, or more, of all computer users are aware of chat rooms,
or channels. If you use a standard ISP (Internet Service Provider) you can
use Internet Chat. Once logged into your ISP, simply launch your IRC
program. MIRC is available for both Windows 3.1, and Windows 95. If you
are using a Macintosh, you can use a program called IRCLE. When you launch
your IRC program, you will find a list of servers to choose from. You will
find that most all of these 'pre-programmed servers offer thousands of
'less than honorable' channels. Family, morals, and knightly virtues are
not well represented. Feel free to delete them all if you wish. Press the
add button and add this address: 131.230.64.57 This is the address for the
SCA Chat Network. All SCA related channels are owned, operated, and
registered by SCA members. Once attached to the server type /join #sca .
You are now in the channel. Type in your comments in the command line and
press enter to join the fun. Conversation ranges from event talk, armor
talk, cooking, and just about anything you might want to talk about. Other
channels will concern themselves with more in depth conversation on a
specific topic. You can type in /list for a full list of available
channels. Find one that interests you and /join #channel name. SCA
channels will be easily recognized by their names. We are using University
Resources for this chat network, so we should avoid channels not recognized
as SCA. Throughout the day you will find persons from all over the knowne
world. Ask questions, help answer questions, but most importantly HAVE FUN!
For more info on the channel see our Web page at
www.ionnet.net/~lordulf/chan/
You can download MIRC and IRCLE from the web. The addresses are, for MIRC,
www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/park/6000/index.html and for IRCLE
www.xs4all.nl/~ircle.
Below are some of the most common IRC commands. Check the HELP area in
your software for more information.
