And do you know what becomes of these letters? I've still got
some of them. From Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1984 and Aviano Air
Base, Italy in 1995. Letters from school children saying "I'm
writing this as part of my sixth grade project and my teacher
says I have to" and from the farmer's wife in Minnesota saying
"Thanks for being there, my husband is a vet, the kids are
grown and gone and we're thinking of you." Some had drawings,
some had school photos.

We wrote back to as many as we could. In Cuba we handed them
out in bundles. In Aviano there was a container set up that in
the chow hall so you could pick some up and respond. I never
got more than two follow-up letters to the people I wrote to
but I'm assuming most were thrilled to know their letters were
read. Maybe I'll visit the schools that the kids sent in as a
class requirement.

Even to the ones that didn't get a reply. THANKS. They really
brought some smiles.
