In the 6/14/1999 issue of People magazine is an article about Donald
Jackson
(calligrapher to Queen Elizabeth), who is undertaking the "first
complete,
handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the printing press
was
invented more than 500 years ago." The Bible has been commissioned by
Saint
John's University in Collegeville, Minn. (which, yes, has a monastary
attached). The article says that the work will be 7 volumes, using
handmade
pigments (as well as gold, silver, platinum and copper) on vellum sheets
2
feet tall by 32 inches wide, with Jackson doing the first volume himself
and
designing/overseeing the other 6. The project will take $3 million over
six
years and will "involve calligraphers and artisans from all over."

No information on how to contact them, but I suppose you could call the
university and ask how to get involved... ; )
