hehehe
Sorry folks, but the Period Fishing subject has returned...
I found something I found to be 'very' interesting today during some online
research of period fishing and thought I'd share it. I never thought that
my research would address
knitting, but here it is.
Turns out that there's a tradition among centuries of fishing villages in
many countries.
These villages each had their own particular stitch. Here's where it gets
a little gross. The stitches used in making the fisherman's jerseys helped
identify the bodies of drowned fisherman who were found.
Now this leads to another question: Was there some kind of local office
established that had a sample of 'all' the village's stiches? Should a man
be washed upon the shore, would they take the piece of clothing and say,
"From where did this originate?"
I'll leave that to the knitting Laurels to discover/discuss.
Me, I'm just a non AOA person who loves fishing and is beginning to wonder
if I want to find out any more about the ancient art of fishing that I
love. heheh
