In my experience attending courts, I've found that most people holding
conversations
during court are not the people there to witness the court but those
standing in the
back of the hall so they don't really care if they can hear or not.
I would think the herald in FRONT of the procession saying "ALL RISE
FOR THEIR ROYAL MAJESTIES" should be enough notice that court is about to
begin. And
if that wasn't enough "NOW OPENS THE COURT" should give the rest a clue. We
are unfortunate
in the fact that many of our events are held in places simply not built for
sound. Let's face it, gyms and
open halls don't have the greatest acoustics. I do believe everyone could
hear better if the conversations
would cease when court begins.
I think one of the basic rules of courtesy taught while most us of are
still small children are:
don't interrupt, and don't speak while someone else is speaking.
Not every herald has learned projection but, after being the royal
chamberlain for two reigns, I sure wouldn't want the job.
I think it takes a lot of courage to get up in front of that many people
just to be ignored by many, and I have
seen many heralds have no voice left after a long court.
The projection/ talking in the background issue seems to be a vicious
circle. The less you can hear, the more people
talk. The more people talk, the less you can hear. We have control over
how we as individuals behave in a court,
we don't have control over the particular herald that has volunteered to
herald court.
Perhaps you would be willing to teach projection at one of the next heraldic
symposiums, and I would be more
than happy to get up on my soap box and let an audience know how I feel
about the rudeness of talking during
court.
Like I said, this is one of my pet peeves and I don't accept any excuse for
rudeness.
