Heh, I have done that twice. Once for Margaret of Shaftesbury (I had her
convinced I'd rather go out for feast, but "you promised Feidilimidh you'd be
there"). The other time I was with John of Calador, and the King called us up
during a lull in the fighting. "What does HE want? Come along with me, John;
I don't want to have to find you again." And then when we got there, I begged
the boon for John, and he was put on vigil.

I cannot tell a lie (not very effectively, at least) but I can deceive with a
clean and happy heart if I know I'm only postponing the moment of Truth until
it will have maximum impact.
