Well, other than my "holding onto the award and letting you know your
presence is requested at a future event," I can think of the following:

If you've recommended someone for an award and know they've suddenly had a
change of plans, find Their Majesties, their chamberlain, or the signet.
Mention that you had nominated Lord Bob for his Chartreuse Widget and
specified that event, but he couldn't make it. (You can preface it by
saying, "I wrote in an award recommendation for this gentle, and I don't
know whether it's being given, but just in case....")
