            Martin Luther

            On this day in 1483 religious reformer
            eformer Martin Luther was born in Eisleben,
            Germany. The most significant figure in the
            Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther
            inspired the church that bears his name
            with his early sixteenth century attacks on
            the corruption of the Catholic church. He
            nailed his famous 95 theses condemning
            the papal sale of indulgences to a
            Wittenberg church door in 1517, and
            refused to retract his opinions when
            summoned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles
            V to the Diet of Worms.
