The Feast of St. Julian the Hospitaler (Bardic Madness X)

Julian was the Patron Saint of Innkeepers and Ferrymen. February 12th is
his Feast Day. This event features twelve (yes, count them, twelve!)
challenges to stir the creative juices and provide a full day of
entertainment for those practicioners and patrons of the arts bardic,
poetic, musical, and theatrical.
Site Opens: 9:00am Closes: 11:00pm Site is WET. Handicap access ground
floor only. Site fee $5 (includes lunch). Feast $10 by Feb 1, $12 after.

Directions: The site is the Greenville Grange Hall in Greenville WI just
west of Appleton on the corner of US Hwy 45 and County Hwy BB. From US Hwy
41 take the Prospect Avenue exit (Cty BB), and go approx. 4 miles west.
The Grange is on the NE corner of the intersection and Hwy 45
Herein are the challenges issued:
Challenge Period the First: (Warmups) 9:30-11:00
Quod Libet
Given a proposition, take a deep breath and present an argument
for or against it. Propositions (of the Philosophical, Logical,
Legal, Rhetorical, etc. kind) will be solicited from the audience.
Tavern Tales
While travelling to and from SCA gatherings, we have often dined in
restauraunts with our companions. In any medium, tell us of a
particularly memorable experience you have had while in a
restauraunt as part of the SCA.
Tangle Box
Given a list of 20 words and a list of tunes, compose a song
to one of the tunes that uses as many of the words as possible.
Classes 11:00-12:00
Challenge Period the Second: 12:00-1:30
Tongue Twister
Construct a tongue twister with a period or current middle ages
theme and challenge the audience to repeat your tongue twister
five times quickly.
What the Animals said:
Compose/present/depict an animal fable, known in period, or
about period, or the current middle ages. This may be done in any
medium: poem, song, play, painting, sculpture, etc.
On a Journey:
Compose/present/depict a journey, the people on it, or a notable
event of it. The journey can be physical or spiritual, real or
imaginary, from the historical period, or the current middle ages
(or any combination of the above).
Classes 1:30-2:30
Challenge Period the Third: 3:00-4:30
Mazacroca
Given several texts to chose from in foreign languages,
"translate" one of them and explain what it "really" means.
The Boatman's Song:
Compose/present/depict a work for, by, or about boats, and the
people who live or work upon them.
In Praise of the Hostellier
Compose/present/depict a work in praise of someone who has
shown you great hospitality, or of great hospitality shown in period.
4:30-5:30 Northshield Bardic College Annual Meeting
Feast 6:00-8:00 & Challenge Period the Fourth
Drink and Be Merry:
Something to encourage drinking and conviviality. This should be
something that either original for the occasion or
is not commonly heard in the current middle ages.

Theme to be announced later
Bard Scribe Illuminator
Theme to be given on the day
Court and Dancing to follow feast.
We are still looking for teachers in performance techniques and
practice, period poetry and literature, the role of the bardic arts in
history, and the role of the bardic arts in the SCA.
If you would like to teach a class at Bardic Madness, please contact Lord
Wilhelm in the next few weeks, preferably before the end of the year, so
we can coordinate the schedule.
