"The Rapier and small-sword, 1460-1820" by A.V.B. Norman is back in
print. For those not familiar with this book, the author uses period
sources (paintings and extant weapons) to date hilts and pommels. It's
very similiar to Oakeshott's typology of medieval swords.
It's a great book for those that wish to document rapier weapons
appropriate to the SCA timeframe.
