My father has been dead these 38 years, and yet I know he lives in me, my
sisters and my brother, who was born after he died. Several years ago, my
mom received some rather large boxes in the mail, and inside them were a
number of my father's things - yearbooks, photos, military effects from WWII
and other assorted things. Among those things was his 1942 diary. Reading it
gave me a lot of insight into my father as a young man. That year, my
father's favourite uncle died rather suddenly. I read as he struggled to
come to terms with this loss, and one entry in his diary struck me in
particular and has stayed with me ever since. He wrote, "A person is never
gone so long as they are loved and remembered." Whenever I miss Daddy, I
think on that entry and it brings me great comfort.
