Oh rapture...oh joy. This is Holiday Heaven(tm)

Did anyone else see TNT's "A Christmas Carol" with Patrick Stewart
as Scrooge? It was on last night from 8-10 and 10-12 on TNT. I chose
to watch this over network's "Santa and Pete", which was a tale of
Santa Claus and his original sidekick, Black Pete. Ya gotta know
your Santa lore to understand this. I can recommend a dandy book,
"When Santa Was A Shaman", from Llewellyn Books.

If you missed "Christmas Carol" both times it was on last night,
you get another chance this Thursday at 10pm. And probably a few
more times after that as well, TNT tends to run its own productions
several times. Don't dawdle, don't miss this, if you skip every
other holiday special, _don't_miss_this_.

What an absolutely delightful treat! Stewart is a deliciously
menacing Scrooge, and there are some downright scary bits when
Marley begins to make his appearance, starting with the doorknocker.
Superb effects, tastefully used.

It gets better and better... Joel Grey as the ghost of Christmas
Past is perfectly cast. The aging of the ghost of Christmas Present
is wonderfully done, and the ghost of Christmas Yet To Come is scary
down to your shoes! There are details here straight from Dicken's
novel that not many productions of this time-honored tale will
touch. There are extensive bits of vocabulary lifted directly from
the book.

Costumes are wonderful, casting is delightful, the story is always
entertaining, and this production makes it all seem fresh and new.

Warm up the vcr's for this one, you'll want to watch it again and
again. I give this one ten stars on the Holiday Tree of approval.
It's a classic. Better than Albert Finney, better than George C.
Scott, better than Alistair Sim, better than Reginald Owen.

(certified Christmas Carol fan....with six versions in the
collection and a seventh, as of Thursday night at 10, the vcr
screwed up last night)
