Greetings,

I'd like to try something on the Middlebridge that was suggested by Duke
Cariadoc some years ago.

Cariadoc suggests that a group of people should try to answer simple
questions about their personas--simple, at least, if you really live in your
persona's time. The answers can't be made up; you have to have some basis
for your answer in research.

We could do this on the Middlebridge simply by posing a question and then
looking up the answers. I would think that a month would be a good stretch
of time to spend doing research and discussion of a particular question, so
we could pose a new question each month.

Cariadoc's list of suggested questions is on the Web at

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/little_things.html

I'll start off with this one:

What kinds of money do you use? What are the relative values of the
different kinds? How much does dinner at the inn cost? How much does a horse
cost? How much does a skilled worker make per month?

If you're wondering how it might work, I'll provide an answer for a modern
US citizen.

I use US dollars as my currency for the most part. For smaller amounts we
have coins and we use paper money for larger transactions. None of this
money is based on a physical standard; its value is arbitrary and changes
relative to the value of currency in other nations. However, the US economy
is stable enough that the value of a dollar doesn't change that much from
year to year. The US dollar is accepted as currency in some other parts
of the world, but if I travel outside the borders of the US I will probably
have to have my money changed into another currency. However, I rarely
travel outside the US and so this isn't an issue from day to day.
Dinner at the "inn" can cost between $4 for a very cheap dinner to hundreds
for a very expensive one. When I go out to a restaurant, I usually spend
between $7 and $10. I don't know how much a horse costs, but a car will
cost between $100,000 and $500. My car, a small model that is a few years
old, is worth about $5000. A skilled worker will usually make at least
$2000; workers who have skills that are particularly in demand can make
$10000 per month.

Can you do this for your persona? I can't. I'm going to do some research
on this question and see what I can find out...perhaps others could do the
same.
