Actually salvaging older garment is not only period but practical. I think

you are starting down that path of putting your self in your personas place.
That is an important step in understanding your persona and how they would
react in their world.
    You can use trim as a means of replacing the embroidery that you have

problems with. Some of the basic embroidery is not to hard on the hands,
chain stitch come to mind. Actually I have always felt that it helped me.
With all this documentation your getting perhaps you can trade some research
nights for the sewing you need!
