Jerry Pournelle, the science fiction write: he majored in
physics in college, but couldn't get any of the problems
done correctly. He switched to psychology, got a PhD,
entered science fiction, became a success.
Many years later, hand-held calculators came out, cheaply.
He bought one, went back to his college physics text,
tried doing the problems. He got all of them correct.

Turns out, he understood everything - but couldn't add,
subtrace or multiply worth a damn.

(If you can't do math, you'd hate slide rules. I was
good in math - and still hated slide rules. Then calculators
came onto the market in mass - after I'd already graduated
from college. <sigh> ONe wonders, one does.)
