I hate to disappoint, but it says right here in my copy of _The_Mabinogion_, "Math the son of Mathonwy was lord over Gwynedd....."
It then goes on to describe the sociopolitical status of Gwynedd and some of Math's, oh, lets call them predilections Clearly, the Celts were familiar with Math.
