Greetings!

Could someone verify for me that vinegar is the substance I'd use to set the
color during pre-washing in fabric? The specific case in point is 100%
cotton velveteens. I imagine they'll probably run during the pre-washing
and pre-shrinking process. If so, what is the precise procedure to set the
color? Would I simply add some vinegar or whatever the appropriate
substance is to the laundry soap and wash as usual with cold water? Or
would I create a vat of the substance and submerge the fabric into it prior
to washing and pre-shrinking? The velveteens are marked as cold water
washable on gentle cycle, no fabric softener, gentle dry, and finally iron
as needed.

Thank you in advance for your knowledgeable advice.
